Tania was the icon of her time

As Tania, Patty Hearst was the main icon of her time. Her experiences force not just Ms. Hearst but all of us to question to what extent we have free will and to what extent we are subject to larger forces over which we have no control. Kidnapped and locked in a closet, Ms. Hearst had no real choice but to join her captors and rob banks under her new name "Tania". And yet there was something chillingly real about Tania too. It's hard to put a finger on it, but Tania's performance seemed like something more than just a kidnap victim acting under duress. Even though the change may have happened under duress, ultimately Patty Hearst really did become Tania. Because Ms. Hearst was once Symbionese, she understands the Symbionese mindset perfectly and therefore her autobiography has incredible power behind it. The book also raises, for me, a more optimistic question: if we can be forced to make profound, and undesirable, changes in ourselves through forced changes in our environment, could not we also, at our own initiative, make profound positive changes in ourselves by choosing the correct environment?

A must read, in order to solve your curiosity of Patty!

I was not even born when around the era of Patty Hearst. But having visited the Hearst Castle in San Simeon, it really caught my attention. After having read the book I now have a better image of what happened and from her side. If you thought she was guilty before, you wont after reading this I gave it only 4 stars because I thought she could have talked more about her life after the SLA and the trial so that we could know what she is doing now and how she managed to get her life back together.

The first lays out a framework for understanding peasant politics and rebellion, much of which is applicable to rural areas of the contemporary global south. Scott then goes on to develop his arguments regarding everyday forms of peasant resistance using the comparative example of the religious tithe in France and Malaysia, and tracing the forms of resistance that cover their own tracks and avoid direct clashes with authorities. For much of the world’s population, and for most of its history, this sort of politics was far more common than the violent clashes that dominate the history books, and in this book one can examine the anatomy of such resistance in rich comparative detail. Finally, Scott explores how the state’s increasing grip on its population: its identity, land-holding, income, and movements, is a precondition for political hegemony. Crucially, in examining the invention of state-mandated legal identities, especially, the permanent patronym and the vagaries of its imposition on vernacular life, Scott lays bare the micro-processes of state-formation and resistance.

fairly sophisticated quantitative tools and methods. This book
serves as an introduction to financial mathematics with special

illustrative examples, algorithmic implementations are demonstrated
using "Mathematica" and the software package "UnRisk" (available
for both students and teachers). The content is organized in 15

About the Author

Hansjoerg Albrecher is Professor of Actuarial Science at the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Lausanne, as well as a Faculty Member of the Swiss Finance Institute. Previous affiliations include the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz, the University of Linz, the University of Aarhus, K.U. Leuven and Graz University of Technology. Volkmar Lautscham has graduated in Technical Mathematics and Financial/Industrial Management from Graz University of Technology and Karl-Franzens University, respectively, with longer academic stays abroad in Sheffield, London and Stockholm. From 2006 to 2009, he was working for a major investment bank in London focusing on credit underwriting/structuring and real estate. The author currently holds a position at the University of Lausanne, where he pursues a PhD degree and teaches within the MSc Actuarial Science programme.

Philipp Mayer obtained his PhD in financial mathematics from Graz University of Technology. He then held amongst others a post-doc position at the Radon Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz, before returning to Graz as an assistant professor, where he carried out research in financial mathematics and taught both bachelor and master level courses. In 2010 he joined the Financial Markets department of a major financial institution in Brussels, where he is responsible for modeling equity, commodity and hybrid instruments.

Good Book

I've never bothered to review any book on Amazon prior to this note, but I felt the book was unduly trashed in the "grad student" review and I wanted to even the score a bit. I purchased the book and have used it along side Glasserman's (very useful) book for financial applications. I found the book to be a nice companion to the Glasserman book, generally going into greater mathematical detail.

This book is definitely one of the best if you want to gain an in-depth understanding of Statistical Computing/Monte Carlo method. The authors are among the most famous authorities in this area(actually much of the material introduced comes from their own papers). Some mathematical/statistical sophistication is needed to fully understand the material. I would recommend it to those who specialize in statistics, applied probability, operations research, etc.

What makes for a successful company? In a sometimes breathless, often boyish manner, Semler, a counselor of a Brazilian company (Semco), relates the transformation of a traditionally structured business into one quite literally without walls and rules. Semler details his not-so-easy steps in the metamorphosis: abolishing dress codes and regulations; decentralizing plants; getting rid of paperwork and titles (hence, his appellation as counselor, not CEO); and creating a consultative democracy in which employees set their own salaries and work hours and vote on managerial candidates, among other responsibilities. If it sounds too much like utopia, Semler admits that Brazil's economic downturn has impacted Semco and that, yes, being born with a silver spoon certainly colors his vision. First 100 pages were great

I really liked the first 1/3 of this book up to page 100. But then past that I was struggling to finish it. I kept pushing myself to read a few more pages with hopes that it would get better. But finally stopped around page 200 and then skimmed through the remainder. The first part was great because it covers the authors story of running the company traditionally and then implementing a lot of the new policies. Which was very thought provoking and pretty amazing considering this was over 25 years ago.

After page 100 each chapter covered a story about hiring someone or moving them to another department. Or implementing something else. And it just became really boring and drawn out for me. And when he writes about subsidizing lunches for workers making less money, and allowing employees to set their own salaries based on things like living expenses it comes across to be a bit socialist leaning. And I don't mean that in a good or bad way. On the first page the author writes that it's not purely capitalistic or socialist. He writes that it's a new way. A third way. And it seems like that third way has borrowed tenets from each.

Anyway, This book should be read to challenge your current thinking and to read about a more democratic work environment. Even if you only make it to page 100. It should not be read as a complete guide for a company or as if everything covered is the absolute best way to do things.

My Favorite Business Book Ever

I must have bought people 20 copies of this book...at least. This book is the best distillation of what democracy, honesty, transparency and courage look like in the workplace. They produce spectacular financial result and deep fulfillment for the employees. I read this book in 2006 or earlier for the first time and I keep coming back to it over and over again. Although his business is a complex manufacturing business, you can apply the lessons here to small or large companies, sales organizations, restaurants, tech companies and non-profits. The book is radical...and surprisingly revolutionary. It also makes you realize, by describing in such detail what an ultra high trust work environment looks like, how much of our workplaces treat us like dishonest children...and we often fulfill those expectations. I don't say it lightly...but this book was life changing and still in for me...

The start of a new era?????

I bought this book because I read about Semco and what its boss had created.
From what I heard he had created a workplace that was democratic, fun to work at and all in all a good lesson of how companies can be run. So, when I found out he had written a book about it, I wanted to read it.

And I was not disappointed. He describes clearly and with great detail how he transformed his fathers company from a bureaucratic, top-down run company into a much more democratic and fun workplace. And it all started with allowing employees to vote on which color uniforms they want.

All in all, I love this book. It seems to be part of a new era about working differently from the past. Perhaps era is not the right word, but movement might be a better description. Other elements in this movement are ROWE from Jodi Thompson and Cali Ressler, Beyond Budgeting, Alexander Kjerulf with his Positive Sharing website as being the Chief Happiness Officer, Tim Ferriss with his Four Hour Workweek, the guys from 37signals and many others.
