Claire Shaeffer is an internationally respected author, lecturer, college instructor and columnist. After the original Couture Sewing Techniques was published, I visited the workrooms of James Galanos shortly before he retired. He insisted initially that he was not a couturier since most of designs were sold in stores. I disagree; the standards which he set were of the highest quality so I have included him in this edition. More recently, I visited the workrooms of Chado Ralph Rucci—the only American invited to show his designs with the couture collections in Paris. He is a master of the art and the craft of haute couture.

Shortly before I began the revision, I had the opportunity to work with Phyllis Magidson, the curator at the Museum of the City of New York, on a project that focused on Mainbocher and Charles Frederick Worth. This research expanded my knowledge of techniques used in the first hundred years of haute couture while reminding me that many techniques which I had written about earlier had changed little, if at all. This edition includes several photographs from that project.�Many of the photographs in the first edition were no longer available so I’ve selected many new ones from the Chicago History Museum, The Ohio State University, Phoenix Art Museum, and Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising as well as from the Fashion Institute of Technology and Metropolitan Museum of Art. I’ve also included photographs of many garments in my personal collection.�No matter what your sewing expertise, this book will expand your horizons. Most importantly, it is a practical guide for learning the craft of haute couture, but it will also provide new ideas for applying the techniques which you already know. Some techniques are less suitable for beginners and some are impractical for everyday sewing; but most will be of value to the average home-sewer and can be used on a wide range of garments and fabrics. I hope you’ll experiment with the techniques and look for new ways to apply them when you sew.�Like most of you, I have a limited amount of time to sew and cannot make all garments a la couture. For some garments, I mix couture methods with ready-to-wear and traditional home-sewing techniques to achieve the results I want. I encourage you to do the same. Use this book as a resource, whether you limit your couture sewing to a detail here and there or decide to make an entire garment from beginning to end with couture techniques.�I find sewing by hand and with couture techniques extremely rewarding. The pleasure of both making and wearing beautifully constructed garments far exceeds the time and effort required to complete them. mind blowing

3 years ago i shunned my dying sewing machine (partly because it scared my dog) and took to sewing garments by hand. I am mostly self-taught, and learned a lot about construction from tv shows, youtube and closely examining garments in high end retailers. This book is a god send. It's not for the beginner sewer, or someone who wants easy or quick fixes. If you are an experienced machine sewer or enjoy sewing by hand and want to learn how to properly fit and construct garments this is your book. It is full of tricks, anecdotes and details (seriously, you will need to read this a dozen times to internalize and remember the content), and so worth it. I'm about to look for more of Claire's books because this one is so well developed I feel like I can trust her technique and delivery more than any other so source I've found. I never considered skipping darts in certain fabrics for shaping via shrinking and stretching. I have been dying for a detailed guide to welted pockets. I have Vogue's Guide to Sewing, which is wonderful, but this is sewing for another league. I may not be coming into this book with the skills of some other reviewers, but if you think you're about my level when I bought this book, you will appreciate what Claire has to offer. And at this price?!?! Unreal. On to find more books by this author...

Hoke Moseley never saw him coming: the person who crashed into his squalid little hidey-hole in the Eldorado Hotel.��When his assailant was was done, Hoke's pride and joy, his dentures, were gone.��So were his gun and his badge.

Recovering from the brutal beating, Hoke tried to figure out who had administered it. The one place he didn't look was at a pair of ill-suited lovers: an ex-con from California and a simpleminded whore was was studying business management at Miami-Dade college.

What the two had in common was a demented interest in haiku, a Hare Krishna who died of a broken finger at a Miami airport, and the acquaintance of a cop without any teeth: the very cop who, as soon as he remembers, will hunt them down.��All the way down.

South Florida time warp.

Note sure I appreciate a vicious psychopath carrying the name Freddy, but he does and, as the girl he never got around to killing notes "He does have his good points." Book is an interesting time warp, seeing Miami in the 80s with reference on one page to Woolworths, Burdines, and Eckerd Drugs which no longer grace the Florida retail scene, constant smoking anywhere and everywhere by most of the characters, police officers needing to borrow a phone on scene to report in, etc. The story is interesting, if unusual. Short and not so sweet with a most unusual "hero", a cop living in a broken down flophouse style hotel, deeply in debt due to a divorce and unable to make much headway as the daughters need braces, and he needing to get his dentures replaced,etc. (Note those dentures play an interesting role in the narrative.) Not sure why the author needed to keep mentioning prices unless it was to tie it to the time period. Still, one of my more interesting reads lately.

An excellent, quirky crime novel

Charles Willeford is an underrated crime writer from the 1950s through the 1980s. This book was something of a breakthrough novel for him. With good reason. The book is smoothly written, well plotted and has some wonderful touches of absurdist humor. Like Elmore Leonard, Willeford's best characters are the bad guys and the bad guy in this book is really something. I would highly recommend this book to any fan of modern crime fiction. Good book.

I hiked the Appalachian Trail again last week. My transcendent experience was made possible by David Miller of Titusville, who hiked the entire trail in 2003 and wrote about it in his new book Awol on the Appalachian Trail. Miller is a wonderful writer who expresses the emotions as well as the facts of the world's most famous hiking trail. Miller does a particularly good job of describing how hikers' moods change more sharply than the physical ups and downs of the mountain chain -- from senseless euphoria to mindless morosity -- as they put one foot in front of the other for months at a time. In fact, hikers spend many of their thoughts contemplating why in the heck they're out there, suffering through the blisters, bugs, rain and boredom that are as much a part of the experience as the dramatic views and inspiring wilderness. Reads like a daily travel log

I kept waiting for some insight or even a glimpse into what the trip meant to Miller but it really reads like a trip log where he chronicled his daily hike with little to no description of his surroundings or emotions. It was interesting for a while - right up until I realized that every chapter was virtually the same as the last with a (slightly) different list of characters and states. The endless roll of hiker's trail names and the description of the rocks and mud on the trail all ran together by the end. I wasn't looking for another "Wild" but something besides a recounting of the daily mileage, blisters and other hikers would have been nice. It did get me motivated to try a long distance hike (not a thru hike) though.

I got this and another AT book, because I wanted to understand the experience of a through hiker as closely as possible, to understand if it's something I want to undertake. I've recently gotten the bug, so to speak, and I just want to know - is this something I could possibly do? I live a pretty sheltered life, and I don't want to minimize this challenge - I want to understand it in depth so that if I do ever undertake it, I will have a good idea of what to expect and hopefully, not flame out.

Of course there are a lot of choices of first-person AT through-hike testimonials. I chose this one because I could identify with the author in a couple of ways - my work life is one of corporate / office-centric work that feels restrictive and locked-in, and I am at an age where one might begin to question, do I still have the vigor to take on such a challenge (a bit older than the author was when he started)? Or might I five years from now?

I did really enjoy the book. The author has a dry humor that just rarely shows through, and at least once I wondered, is he messing with the reader? I do wish he would have deployed it a bit more often. More than that, I was hoping for a bit more discussion on the practical side - cooking meals, filtering water, climbing steep sections, setting up tents in wind and rain, battling bugs, sleeping near noisy, smelly strangers, not showering for days at a time, and yes, going #2 in the woods. There are some mentions on these and other practical matters, but mostly they are not discussed in detail. Some might appreciate that, but I was looking for the nitty gritty of "This is what it's like living in the woods for months on end". One aspect that did get a good detailed treatment was foot maladies, foot leg/health, and footwear (all very important). Another was the more general topic of 'food acquisition' shall I say (as opposed to cooking).

The book was laid out very well. The organization and chapter-heading maps did a good job of helping me understand the flow of the walk and the length of sections. The chapters did a good job of helping me understand some of the personality and relative difficulty of different sections of the trail, and a few of the many interesting towns, hostels, inns, trail waypoints, landmarks, and people. I appreciated the author's personality and how he discussed his motives, and aligned his dedication to his family to the ultimately somewhat self-centric decision to go on a hike alone for months. No offense intended to any through-hikers. I think it's also a grand way to show your family what is possible, and hopefully inspire them not to limit themselves. Along with friends, co-workers, and strangers on Amazon.

Fabulous, gritty, nuts & bolts of trail hiking

If you want to read a book about actually hiking the AT, and not a fluffy, sappy account of someone's emotional life and trying to escape their problems and then every once in a while they're hiking on this trail, then this is THE book! But be clear that this is what you will be getting; a day to day, blow by blow account of hiking the AT including the minutia, drudgery and often repetitiveness that is a part of this 2000+ mile journey. It just is. That being said, some parts of this book just aren't that gripping. But, they are honest and true to author David Miller's experience. I loved it. I loved the little details of everyday trail life. I found it absolutely fascinating and this was what I thought was lacking in another well known bestseller that was recently made into a film and was so disappointing and "wild" to me. Are there life lessons learned from hiking solo for so many miles? Of course, duh. But, the physicality and actual hiking of the trail is what I was interested in and what the author gives his full attention in this amazing recounting. If that's what sounds interesting to you, then you will not be disappointed!

timely, insightful essays on the popular TV show

Fourteen chapters including Introduction and Afterword topically and insightfully take up the popular TV series "The Walking Dead" from many different angles. The authors are academics from universities mostly in the US, but a few from England or Australia. Editor Keetley is an associate professor at Lehign University in Pennsylvania. Like her, the others teach English or writing; although one is a criminologist. Besides the Introduction, Keetley has a chapter titled "Human Choice and Consciousness." The criminologist Angus Nurse from England has the chapter ""Asserting Law and Order Over the Mindless."

The essays are divided into two main sections. The first named "Society's End" explore ways humans and zombies are "symbiotically bound together." The locus of this is violence. Zombies, virtually programmatically, commit violence against humans. That is all they do. Zombies need no nourishment. They do not grow food, harvest, or raise animals for nourishment. Their attacks on humans are not for nourishment either. Their violence is never-ending and empty—violence for violence's sake.

By comparison, the violence of humans is complicated, though still at the surface of their being taking not much provocation or rationale to happen. With humans, incidents of violence or witnessing it occasionally gives rise to moments of sentimentality. More importantly though as represented in the TV series, violence is rooted in the need and desire for safety, or security. Unlike the zombies, humans commit violence against one another, justified by fears of the other, racism, shared sense of threat of the unknown and unmanageable, and the sublimation of these in what are seen as necessary actions to provide security against terrorism.

The second section "Posthumanity" moves beyond violence relating to real or imaginary social conditions and self-evident characteristics of human nature to the series as a scenario of contemporary apocalyptic visions and the historical—though actually millennial—break to the "posthuman" (along the lines of the concept that humanity has moved into a "post-Christian" phase). The five essays here explore the notion of a "blind corporeality" humans share with zombies. This section moves beyond the topic of violence in its varied contemporary manifestations to a broader anthropological view that the zombies "represent an 'interior' threat, some non-human yet finally entrenched part of ourselves." This non-human area of humans—to put it this way—is seen reflected in the widespread illiteracy, ignorance of the past, and other modern phenomena dissolving language, knowledge, education, and other traditionally valued pursuits keeping humans from turning to violence and central to conserving an accepted social order.

The essays are exceptionally stimulating, relevant, and timely.
