Not the book for beginner or pro.
By SouthBayMachine
If you are looking at buying this book you probably already know much of what it contains. Not detailed enough to be a "how-to" book for beginners, or a technical referance for the advanced.... It contain some worthwhile tips and introduces a lot of concepts. You will need to buy other books to fill in the details.
The chapters are short and to the point... without actually making the points required to build a CNC machine. Stepper motors are covered in under two pages, Drives in less then a page, and no details on how you would choose one and match another to it. Mach3 control software is discussed (in less than a page) as the most popular controller software available... and since we now know this we might as well assume you can implement it on your own and move on to something else.
CNC Machining Handbook does have a pretty good discussion of G/M-codes and the G81,82,83 canned drilling cycles... though if you are looking for this I'm not sure why you would buy this book. It also has a general discussion and pictures for building a Plasma Cutting Table with some general construction tips.
As a primer, for directions, or as a reference, The CNC Cookbook and surfing the internet would probably serve most people better.
ps. I gave this to my father to read as he is a very beginning CNC'er and isn't so apt to hit the internet tutorials. He liked the book and said it gave him a nice CNC overview. Maybe if that is what you are looking for it could work for you too.
** April 2014: I've scratch built one coil winder, put 3 mills together using kits (sherline and 2 G0704s) re-wired an old Paxton-Patterson/sherline lathe and did a scratch ballnut CNC of a new South Bend 8K (no kits available). I've used the cheap TB6560 all-in-one board, the Gecko G540 and built up several systems using component breakout boards, drivers and power supplies. Have used both Mach3 and LinuxCNC. You couldn't even start to do any of this with the information available in this book.... Kits are the easiest way to start when learning how to build CNC, with YouTube and the internet as your guide.

Save your money
By Dr. Adrian
I have to agree with M. G. Griffin who wrote the first review of this book in December 2010. The book is laid out well however the pictures are of very low quality. The information contained in the book can easily be found on the web in forums like CNCzone.com. Actually CNCzone.com can provide you with more information than this book can and the information is up-to-date.
The author goes from trying to explain specifics about items to leaving you in the air. I'm not sure if he's ever built a CNC machine before of just wanted to write a book about it. In any event he does a poor job throughout the book with connecting with the reader and explaining anything. I know when I buy a how to book (handbook) I expect to walk away with at least gaining more knowledge about the subject than when I started. That's not the case here, you walk away shaking your head wondering why you just wasted the money.
I will give the author credit for attempting to place all the information in one book, so the table of contents get's a high rating. But the actual content, well it's not there. Do yourself a big favor just visit some good CNC forums, join them and read the information, ask questions and have fun. Or visit You Tube and watch the video's either way you'll surpass any information contained in this book within the first hour.
