Review
“Yes Please delivers what it should: life lessons and vicarious thrills…the book is largely a portrait of confidence. Reading it, some of it rubs off on us.” (New Yorker)
“Yes Please is a great story…because it is self-damning and hopeful at the same time.” (Los Angeles Times)
“Pure charm” (People)
“Poehler is very funny, so the jokes are very good…Poehler is very wise, so her advice is on point.” (Slate)
“Delightful...Poehler is frank and funny throughout [Yes Please], as is her nature, but her writing unearths a wise narrator who’s seen some of the worst of life and come out the other side unscathed…Can we get more from Amy Poehler? Yes, seriously, please.” (Newsweek)
“Demonstrates the skill of this excellent comic actress, a funny woman who roots hilarity in specifics.” (Washington Post)
“Required reading for all young women.” (Huffington Post)
“[Yes Please] is honest words of wisdom within a joyous story structure.” (Philadelphia Inquirer)
“Yes Please veers between reminiscing and philosophizing. Poehler had developed some principles over the years and shares them in usually funny fashion.” (Chicago Sun-Times)
“Yes Please isn’t a scan of the comedic brain so much as it is something far better---the full exposure of Poehler’s funny and very magnanimous heart. (Elle)

More Amy Poehler books? Yes Please!
By book_thief
[[VIDEOID:b5e33ce4863f05b9caaf0c9a5aa65115]]I will first admit that I'm a sucker for these type of books. I've read Mindy Khaling's, Tina Fey's, Lena Dunham's and even Ellen Degeneres'. I'll also admit that I'm a 24 year old girl, and that my opinions are probably biased based on my age and the (lack of) life experiences I've had so far.
First of all, if you're considering picking up the book versus buying the Kindle version, I would strongly recommend the hard copy. The book is formatted with glossy pages full of colored pictures and chapter titles that I really love (attached some photos and a video). It makes the reading experience a whole lot more exciting. Every time I turned upon a new chapter, I would have to stop for a moment and smile to myself.
That being said, I was excited about Amy's book because I've an avid fan of Parks and Rec, and her previous work on SNL. To me, she just seemed like a really warm person and people only have compliments when talking about her. I couldn't wait to read a book in her voice and learn more about her past.
Some Youtube clips that I just had to dig up after reading about them from Amy's perspective:
SNL Sarah Palin rap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cG1g5qvgtSg
2011 Emmy's bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyFyJqx1lpc
2009 Emmy's bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jSk8yzlm94
I'm glad to say I was not disappointed at all. Compared to some of the other authors that I have mentioned, Amy does have more stories and chapters on experiences that I couldn't quite relate to (pregnancy, divorce, raising kids), but by reading about those stories I felt a little more prepared for the future. So despite the fact that much of the book were not relatable, I like how she told those stories so outsiders like me could be more familiar with what other people are going through at times like those.
Other than that, the whole book is written in the typical witty/sarcastic tone that most books like this are written in. And I love it. She talks a bit about her past, how she got into acting and improv, stories about all her famous friends, the journey with Parks and Rec and just gives some general life anecdotes. Seth Meyers also makes a guest appearance and writes a short chapter!
I finished the book within a day because it was a speedy read and I never wanted to stop. I suspect I'll be reading it again in a couple months.
All in all, I can't be more happy that Amy Poehler finally decided to publish her own book. Here's to hoping there will be more!

Meh, I Guess?

This book unfortunately reinforces my already settled mindset: I just don't care for comedian memoir-essay books. I'll admit that I've always thought of author Amy Poehler as the less funny part of Tina 'n Amy, but once I started watching Parks & Recreation, I got a lot fonder of Amy. Her Leslie Knope is the first time I've watched a character onscreen and felt like I was seeing someone like me up there. Not physically, the only thing Amy/Leslie and I share there is being short. But the optimism, the determination, the gravitation towards politics...she's a great character and one that's honestly been kind of a role model to me.
So I really wish that I could tell you that Yes Please is an amazing book filled with wit and wisdom that you should rush out and acquire a copy of it right now. But that wouldn't be right, because it's actually an enjoyable enough but pretty standard-issue famous-funny-person-writes-a-bunch-of-essays-about-their-life-and-how-they-got-where-they-are. Amy recounts a very prosaic childhood outside of Boston in solidly middle-class comfort, where she made up stories to add drama to her life. She talks about her time in comedy, starting in Chicago and meeting Tina Fey (their friendship is not especially highlighted, she actually ends up talking more about her bond with Seth Meyers), working on Saturday Night Live, and some of her triumphs and missteps along the way. She talks about Parks & Rec (the book was written between the sixth and seventh/final season of the show) and how much she loves being a part of it. She doesn't talk much about her then-fresh divorce from Will Arnett, but she does talk about being pregnant and becoming a mother at length. Which makes sense, she has two small boys and clearly loves them like crazy. Basically, she just talks about her life.
It's written with warmth and an enjoyably humorous tone, but none of it is especially fresh or revelatory. Part of me wants to believe that you can write a compelling memoir of a more-or-less normalish life without having to relate giant obstacles you've managed to overcome or outrageous things you've gotten up to in your youth, but the available evidence that I've come across suggests otherwise. Amy Poehler has obviously achieved tremendous success, but the way she describes her days of being young and dead broke focus so little on that and so much on the sheer enjoyment she got out of building her comedy career that it hardly seems like she struggled much on her way up the ladder. Which is great, on the one hand. She doesn't try to engineer specious complications, she never pretends that she didn't party and have fun while she was also working her tail off, and it was clearly hard work that led her to the opportunities that she's taken and run with and that have paid off so well for her. But on the other hand, her completely understandable refusal to really get into what seems like her most challenging experience (her divorce) makes it so the book has no dramatic tension. Fundamentally decent person works hard and capitalizes on opportunities she was fortunate enough to have access to and prospers is just not a story that really goes anywhere, interest-wise. If you're a Poehler superfan, you'll love it, but it didn't do much of anything for me.

Great, fun read!
By Puzzle Fan
I absolutely love any book written by a witty comedian. My time to read is for enjoyment and funny ladies like Amy Poehler is right up my alley! I also love the male comedians as well, boys! I have read the works of Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Mindy Kahling, Aziz Ansari, Lena Dunham, David Spade and the list goes on. I think everyone needs that time for something they enjoy and Amy Poehler makes me actually WANT to read, a hobby I let go of not long after college from being so burned out. Even after having multiple brain surgeries and making it very difficult to concentrate, I can honestly say I understood, sped read, and love this book the whole journey through. More people should read and get the most out of it by finding something they enjoy, or authors and stories they enjoy. You can't go wrong with anything by Amy Poehler, whether you have the concentration of a hawk or are suffering from any mental in-capabilities like I do. Anyone can enjoy this read if you like some light-hearted comedic moments, but don't expect a tell all memoir. I hope she writes again and delves further int more details of her life to learn more about her back story and all things that led up to her current career through television and movies.
