About the Author

Hear the words of Wisdom

Wow! I have studied and searched 20-30 years and after great efforts and pains to discern the truth was astonished to see it written in this book and so clearly and easy to understand. That it is the truth should be obvious to any sincere seeker after knowledge. I feel vindicated as the secular world is abysmally ignorant and blind and ridicules anything they cannot grasp. After reading this book which I literally could not put down I am doubly motivated to live to the very best my ability and help all benign life who is willing and asks. There are quite a few of us humans who are not blinded by the cultural bias and government propaganda for whom have enough understanding and wisdom to know the verity of this book as true. For us it is a Godsend. Hail to the words of wisdom! Hail to the holy and sublime! Ever onwards towards Godhead. My highest praise! This was just what I needed to get me back on the holy path ( I am a theosophist, a lover of divine knowledge ).

Spiritual Alchemy

Second in the series, this volume introduces new fascinating characters. One of these is an alchemist with an unusual story to tell which touches on the subject of the long sought after "Philosophers Stone". His story brings to mind "what if" scenarios surrounding the idea of life extension. Not to trivialize it by the echos of the movie, "Ground Hog Day", but there are some cross over themes of getting your life right if given enough time to do so. In both there are spiritual implications that relate to reincarnation and purpose of life questions. This in itself is a very enjoyable contemplation brought on by the evolving story of Radu Cinmar. There is a build up of intrigue as the orientation of the reader shifts to spiritual meanings and contexts towards an encounter with a Goddess; a particular Goddess which I leave to the reader to figure out. If ever there were a meeting between man and a Godess this would be a definitive example. It is far more evocative of an actual meeting than any story I have ever read in the Bagavad Gita. You would have to compare it to the poetic writings of Tagore or Rumi. Well maybe that's an unfair comparison except that the account in 'Moonrise' is portrayed as an actual event where the narrator struggles to put into word the effect she had on him. Maybe its fairer to say this difficult task has some nascent similarity, albeit more eloquently portrayed, in the works of Tagore and Rumi. In this volume and others of Cinmar, the discussions of spiritual matters are highly refined and insightful as far as they go. Even as intermittent are those moment of spiritual clarity are, much can be extrapolated and extended to bridge deeper understanding of the seen and unseen worlds and their relative interaction and causation.

Intriguing information

Having read the Montauk series of books when they first came out, I was curious about this Romanian information. It's like reading an account of a Stargate episode...it's something I'd like to believe, but have no way to verify. So it's a good story, and time will tell what's true and on what level of reality this is occurring. I have just finished book 4, and synchronicity is opening an opportunity to go to Romania in August 2014. Who would have thought?

If you're looking for a general reference on SSH, this is the book you want.

Michael Lucas (author of "Network Flow Analysis," "Absolute FreeBSD," "Cisco Routers for the Desperate," "Absolute OpenBSD," and "PGP and GPG") is as well known to people who do system administration and networking as he is unknown to the general public. Those of us who know of him have come to expect that anything he writes will be top notch.

"SSH Mastery" meets those expectations. If you've worked with Unix or any of its variants for any length of time, you've probably gotten to know SSH pretty well. If you're just starting out with Unix, you are going to get to know SSH. Even though the book is geared towards newbies, there is something in this book for just about anyone who might be interested in it. Lucas goes over pretty much everything most people will want to know about SSH. A lot of what he writes about can be found scattered in other places, but his explanations are concise and clear, which isn't always true of the other references, and it's gathered in one place instead of being dispersed around the Web. If you're looking for a general reference on SSH, this is the book you want.

Going from conversant to master requires a bit of mentoring.

SSH is every where. It is used as the 'modern day telnet.' Many systems administrators all over as well as developers, operational folks and 'techies' of all varieties use SSH and barely touch the surface of what the tool can do.

OpenSSH is the most common implementation of the SSH protocol and is used in everything from routers, appliances through to workstations. Being a small component in Apple's iOS, there are literally millions upon millions of installations.

Michael's book is a great introduction to the topic. He moves on to expand on the tool's use as well as helps the reader develop the more secure authentication patterns all while helping expose the many features of OpenSSH buried in the man pages.

His consistent and easy to follow examples aligned with his humour makes this an easy read. The content doesn't beat the topic to death but definitely gives it enough bruises to get the reader comfortable enough to explore more on their own.

I've found myself writing and teaching SSH tips every place I go so now I have a book I can send people to and save some of that precious time. While there isn't a print copy available at this first release, it is coming and is priced very well to make it affordable (I some times spend more on coffee in a day).

I highly recommend this title to anyone who wishes to not only understand SSH as a tool but also learn how to use it more effectively and securely. May no administrator use simple text authentication ever again.

Great read for beginners or experts

I first encountered Michael Lucas from his books 'Absolute FreeBSD' and 'Absolute OpenBSD' . Both of those books set the bar high, and he certainly hit it again with this book. There is nothing in this book that you couldn't find elsewhere online, but this is the only place to get all the tips and tricks in one location, with a dash of humor added to the mix. You'll go away feeling not only educated, but entertained. If you care about your network, your network's security, and doing things 'the right way', you owe it to yourself to purchase this book. I'm probably not going to read it through again, but I know I'll be flipping through it quite often to get the most out of the tips offered.

Wow, packs a lot in!

The cover doesn't do it justice so take the Look Inside tour. Plenty of historical faces I'll probably never learn(!), but I really enjoyed how thorough the coverage was. The rhythm is to spend two pages on introducing the hand and presenting some ideas for learning it or adding variations, then the next two pages presents a full exemplar and stroke order. Nice to see coverage of contemporary pointed pen and ruling pens too. Very good value from a professional and well-rounded calligrapher, and well worth adding to your calligraphy library.

Outstanding Calligraphy Guidebook A+

This book is outstanding and has helped me develop several of the calligraphic hands that's been lacking in my scribal toolbox. I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to master the scribal arts. The historical information, step-by-step diagrams and full-color illustrations are informative and useful. One of the little things that make this book so nice is the binding style; which allows the book to lay very flat. This is one of the best calligraphy books I own, and I have several.

Separates the men from the boys

This book teaches the finer details of calligraphy like no other. Most books will illustrate stroke order, but this book goes further. For example, I never knew all that was involved with articulating serifs, or how the left middle descending stroke in the letter "M" has a thicker line (hence, the pen must be held at a different degree) than the right stroke, which is thinner in some calligraphy hands. It includes things like this that separate the men from the boys, so to speak.
