Exceptional book (review of 2nd edition)

I read the 1st edition several years ago and I finally decided to buy the book (new 2nd edition). As far as I can tell, the only differences from the 1st edition is the new foreward. So there's no reason to buy the 2nd edition if you already have the 1st one.

This is an exceptional book because it makes Fourier analysis intuitive. It's amazing how simple the Fourier Series is (once you get how it really works). Most texts on the subject overwhelm the reader with equations without bothering to explain what the equations do. (I even question if some of the authors of such texts really understand what they're doing either.) The book also covers basic calculus (which is needed to compute Fourier Series) and then introduces the Fourier Transform (for non-periodic signals) and the FFT.

Unfortunately, I agree with some of the reviews of the 1st edition which feel that the latter is brief and rushed compared to the 1st section. (I personally feel the book should have focused on the DFT vs. the FFT- since the DFT is much easier to understand than the FFT). My only other quibble is that I don't like the fact that the book is so physically big- my guess is that comic books in Japan are this size. But these minor complaints can't keep me from giving it the 5 stars.

For those looking for the next step, I highly recommend Steven Smith's "Digital Signal Processing" (very intuitive) and Richard Lyons' "Understanding DSP" (still intuitive but more mathematical).

Note: Amazon is inconsistent- for some 2nd editions, they retain the reviews from the 1st edition. But for this book, they didn't even though it's really the same book.

Embarassed!

I remember years ago reading the worlds very best explanation of Fourier series, Transforms etc. Then I lent it to some one and never saw it again. In recent years I have read many supposedly 'intuitive' guides to the subject but always felt they did not do the job that this book did. I had even forgotten its title! When I saw this book advertised - I bought it and there it was! My old friend. I was more than pleased to pay for it again. If your not a math wiz but really want understand the Fourier stuff and even basic calculus go out and get this book now!

Good book, would be more interesting if I lived in Eastern PA

Weird Pennsylvania could have been more appropriately named "Weird Eastern Pennsylvania" as I'd say upwards of 80% of the info in it is centered toward the Philly side of the state. It was stil a fun and interesting read, but I'd have loved to have learned about more weirdness on the Western half of PA. Come on, I live here, I know there's all kinds of weirdness to be found! :)

If you live in or been to the Keystone state than you must own this book. After read this book I did not know there were so many abandon insane asylums outside of Philly. There are many interesting stories that are must read for anyone who likes weird and the unusual. If you read it you will like it !!!!

Weird PA- Brings Back Memories of a 'Normal' Childhood in the Keystone State

PA- the postal abbreviation could be mean other things, and still be fitting.

PA- Paranormal activity?

PA- Physics absent?

PA- People abnormal?

As a life-long resident of Pennsylvania (minus a three-year stint in Oklahoma), things like a ghostly handprint on the cell wall of an abandoned county jail, a hill that defies the laws of gravity, piles of rocks that have withstood thousands of years of winter winds and a serpent lurking the waters of Lake Erie all seem pretty darned normal to me. But they are some of the oddities that are nestled between the covers of Weird PA, a new release from Sterling Publishing who brought us Weird US and other weird state books.

This book comes to the delight of the daughter of former traveling show-biz duo. During weekend trips to gigs across the state, we'd always sightsee the roadside attractions and museums. This book brought back fond memories of a childhood full of exploring the Keystone State but still, I learned a lot from this bright and fun title.

The book itself is beautiful--certainly coffee table caliber. The 263 colorful pages are divided into 11 sections: Local Legends and Lore, Ancient Mysteries, Fabled People and Places, Unexplained Phenomena, Local Heroes and Villains, Personalized Properties, Roadside Oddities, Roads Less Traveled, Quaker State Ghosts, Cemetery Safari and Abandoned Places. Each of the sections reveals the oddities, tall tales and myths of Pennsylvania through colorful pictures and testimonies from actual eyewitnesses and personal accounts from the editors who visited most of the included sites. Most of the entries are short snippets, making this a good breeze-through book for those not interested in heavy reading.

If this book does not urge people to gas up their wagons and plot out a Weird PA tour, I don't now what will. In fact, maybe I should get licensing rights to the book and start my own tour group. Hmmm. Anyway, some great sites worth visiting (or steering clear of, take your pick) are Gravity Hill in Bedford County, where a car put in neutral will roll up instead of the obvious; New Hope and historic Philadelphia which are filled with ghost stories of famed Pennsylvanians; Pennhurst, an abandoned mental asylum in Philly and yes, there is even an empty morgue (or is it?); a backyard zoo in Fayette county filled with larger-than-life animal sculptures and in York County, there really is an old woman who lives in a shoe(-shaped house). Okay, former shoe salesman. I was way too tempted to use the nursery rhyme.

Two included places happen to be personal favorites: the burning-for-thirty years Columbia county ghost town, Centralia and Shartlesville's Roadside America. The latter impressed the authors so much they called it, "The most pleasant surprise we found." That makes me happy. This massive model train set spans a huge hangar and represents much of America through miniscule interpretations. A must see!

One gripe: nothing from my county of residence for the last decade (Luzerne) and not enough from the Poconos. Is Northeast PA that weird, that even authors of a book recording the strange will not enter? I would have loved to have seen Boulder Field at Hickory Runn State Park, the Archbald Pothole and the old city underneath Lake Wallenpaupak that draws hundreds of scuba divers--you can see the church steeple from land on a clear day.

I'm all for a sequel- Weirder PA.

An essential book for studying the history of theology.

This is an excellent work for theologians, students, and just theology buffs in general to have on their shelf. Cooper presents us with a well sourced chronology of Panentheism that I feel will satisfy both sides of the God argument. No not that one, but the one about the "God of the philosophers" vs the "new" concept of God. Though I feel that Cooper misunderstands why the so called "classical" construct of God is called the God of the philosophers, this really doesn't take anything away from the whole of the book. If you are looking for a book that tells you how Panentheism proper evolved through Philosophy, this is it.

Good for those green on hacking.

I have some experience with some of the tools mentioned in the book but I wish it was a little bit more up-to-date like maybe some Windows 10 related info. Not sure if anybody is interested in cracking Windows 2000. But the presentation is good and if the book aimed to start small... I think it works. It's an excellent beginner's guide for maybe 2012 but these days... I think there are fresher tools out there. Hope a 2nd edition discusses those. :)

Probably partly my own fault for not reading the full description of the book, but anything that states it is an Ultimate guide should be longer than 64 pages. The information provided in this book is very generic and could be acquired by reading a wikipedia entry on the topic. It provides some useful information, but far from what the title would indicate.

This is the latest in what is becoming an excellent series of introductory books covering a wide range of Earth and environmental subjects. The remit appears to be, select a good author who knows the subject well and, above all, someone who can communicate it clearly and with some enthusiasm. Then add in good graphics, excellent photographs and keep the price as low as possible. It's a winning formula that others have failed to find. Professor Adrian Harvey has retired from the University of Liverpool where he researched and taught geomorphology courses to undergraduates. As such he passes both the competency and enthusiasm tests mentioned above. He writes well and has produced an engaging book that is packed with information aided by superb photographs and excellent diagrams and maps. He is clearly a man who has travelled the world in search of beautiful landforms which can be seen by a wide audience. Down to Earth

About the Author
Adrian Harvey is a keen local historian, with a career in graphic design, journalism and publishing in both Australia and Scotland. He is currently the owner/director of the Andrew Paterson Collection (www.patersoncollection.co.uk/) of vintage glass negatives and curator of the online Scottish Highlander Photo Archive.

The book has nice pictures but a lot of information about current day issues (deforestation, oil drilling). I'm more interested in the actual, natural events that does not involve humans. It's also very simple to read: I could have read this in 5th-6th grade. Also, it's a nice small/flat pocket size. Smaller than expected.

BUY this book, it will help you with more than just anatomy

This book will help you with more than just your Anatomy course. I am a third year medical student who used this book prior to taking step one and I can honestly say that the questions in this book helped me get at least 15-20 questions correct and ultimately earn a score in the high 250's. There wasn't a single anatomy or embryology question on my board exam that I had not already encountered in this book. In fact there were multiple pathology questions that I was able to answer because I had seen them when going through this q&a style book.
Do not be one of the people who blows off anatomy and embryology. While these sections don't make up a ton of questions on the exam, I believe that dominating them will help separate you from everyone else.
The way this book is laid out is optimal for learning anatomy, embryology, and how to recognize both when given complex clinical scenarios. This book is challenging, but all answers (right or wrong) are thoroughly explained. Make sure to read all answer explanations, right or wrong, as this is where you will learn the most. Going through this book during your anatomy course in preparation for your final exam and again prior to step one will be of great benefit to whomever chooses to do so. Buy this book if you want to do well in these two subjects.

This Book ROCKS!

I was sick for over a week before a final exam, and I was not able to study nor attend class. For those of you who are medical students, you know this is practically suicide! However, I used this book almost exclusively to prepare for the written section of my exam, and I honestly think it made a difference between me passing and failing. This is a Q & A book, but all of the answers, including the incorrect ones, have detailed explanations. I was therefore able to pick up important concepts as I worked through the problems. I highly recommend purchasing this book.

Gross anatomy and Embryology are two of the most anxiety provoking subjects for most medical students that I know. A great knowledge base in these subjects in crucial for understanding the other courses in a medical school curriculum. Reinforcement of concepts that are present in Anatomy and Embryology courses is the best way to ensure thorough understanding and long-term retention of these subjects. Throughout my medical school career, I have not found a better book in Anatomy and Embryology that actively and concisely allows students to review these hard subjects.

The book is organized into 10 chapters of ~ 50 questions. Each chapter presents USMLE board style Anatomy and Embryology questions of different anatomical divisions of the body. The questions are in vignette form and are identical to the questions in the NBME Anatomy and Embryology subject shelf exam and the USMLE Step 1 exam. Most questions have an associated anatomical figure ranging from drawings and diagrams to very high yield and high resolution CT, MR, XR, and angiograms. Every question has a detailed answer explanation for right AND wrong answers. The questions featured in this book also vary from basic concept that test high yield facts to complex 2nd and 3rd order questions that make the student connect concepts from different subjects to anatomy and embryology.

I used this book to study and review clinical anatomy and embryology for my USMLE Step 1. I had about 25 gross anatomy/structure questions on my exam, and each one was on a concept that was presented in a similar question that was presented in this book! The sheer amount of radiological and pathological images that are in this book simulate the exam style perfectly. The difficulty of questions in this book are also match those of the USMLE/NBME exams well. I scored in the 260's on my Step 1 and I attribute my success in Anatomy and Embryology on that exam to this book.

I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who wants a thorough and active review of Anatomy and Embryology and anyone who is taking an anatomy or embryology class. This book is quickly becoming a favorite among those at my school that are getting ready to take their USMLE Step 1 board exams and their NBME anatomy subject exams!
