Martin H. Krieger is Professor of Planning in the Sol Price School of Public Policy at the University of Southern California and a Fellow of the American Physical Society. He has taught at Berkeley, Minnesota, MIT, and Michigan and has served for many years on university promotion and tenure committees. He is author of Doing Physics (second edition, IUP, 2012), Urban Tomographies (2011), Constitutions of Matter (1996), and Doing Mathematics (2003), among other books.

BABYLON IS A BLOCKBUSTER

From the first page to the last, the author, Gerald Posner delivers an exciting expose of the seedy underside of the Politics, Powers and Prerogatives of the players that control Miami and Miami Beach. The author exposes the esoteric secrets that transformed this community into a modern day Babylon. Nothing is held back, from the filthy political back door deals to the chilling coke controlled economy that built these cities and are still building them.

Miami Babylon begins with the beguiling first chapter entitled "Gasoline on a Fire." Posner entices the reader with the historical narrative, revealing the horrendous ordeal of the "Mariel Boatlift" and the everlasting effect it had on the predominately elderly, predominately Jewish, totally defenseless population it destroyed. The reader is enticed by the first hand experiences and riveting revelations as they ride along with Miami Beach Homicide Detective Charlie Seraydar on the midnight shift as he routinely risks his life in trying to save South Beach. Charlie hauntingly reveals, "The first year of Mariel was like a war zone" with the crime rate rising over 600 percent and the elderly being murdered at the highest rate in the history of the city."

Miami Babylon is compulsively readable and wonderfully written.

Newspaper-ish

Posner's book is in essence a dissertation based on a careful review of the Miami Herald's archives. The strength of this book is its parallel between the speculative boom and bust of the 1920s and the 2000s. Jorge Perez commenting on Carl Fisher? Delicious.

Its weakness is the unbalanced chronology. Halfway through the book, you've gone through Miami Beach's 20th century history. The other half focuses - way too closely, on the Beach's recent history. The lack of balance can discourage a reader, and gives the impression that Posner had the benefit of online search engines to research the Beach's recent past.

There is gossip, several interesting behind-the-scenes vignettes, and a mighty struggle to pull together the thematic parallels between Fisher and Perez. On the latter, Posner succeeds, but just barely so.

Miami Babylon Versus Fools Paradise

While everyone is entitled to their opinions I couldn't help but noticing that early reviewers seemed to include a number of people related to the book. For example I assume the poster "Alex Daoud" is the Alex Daoud who was Mayor of Miami Beach.

That being said I think this is a well written and comprehensive overview of Miami Beach and my (independent) appraisal would be four stars. The author, Gerald Posner has written numerous books and the writing, chronological organization of the material and footnoting are all quite professional.

The book begins with early development of the Miami era, the land boom during the 1920s, the decline through the 1930s and 1940s, the growth of Miami Beach after World War Two, the influx of elderly retirees, the devastating impact of the Mariel Boatlift from Cuba,the physical decline of the city, its rediscovery by early gentrification pioneers, the evolution of South Beach culture, "Miami Vice" and the cocaine cowboys, the South Beach nightlife, the zoning battles between the older residents and developers, the condo boom etc.

The author, who apparently started interviews for the book in 2005, was somewhat beaten to the punch by another established author, Steven Gaines, who published Fools Paradise less than a year before this book. Both cover the same topic and time line; consequently there is a lot of overlap. Fools Paradise tends to go into more detail on the nightlife aspect of South Beach (i.e. modeling, the clubs, the promoters). I don't know if Gerald Posner re-focused Miami Babylon after publication of the earlier book. However Miami Babylon has a greater emphasis on the real estate redevelopment and zoning aspects. I note that one reviewer gave only one star on the basis that it covered "boring" real estate deals of no interest to that reader. I think that is unfair relative to the total scope of the book but it is undeniable that real estate aspects have a heavy weighting.

I can recommend both books to readers interested in the subject of Miami Beach/South Beach. If choosing only one to read I would be guided by your interest in nightlife versus re-development.

Isla Dean: Such a tease!

My biggest frustration with Isla Dean is that she writes fiction. She paints such vivid pictures of places I'd like to visit, populated with people I'd like to meet and, in this case, spa treatments I'd like to try, but they're fictional. Sigh...

This book started with thrills scary enough to make it daytime reading for a while, but once I got over my initial nerves, I took it to bed & tore through it in no time. I don't want to spoil anything by citing specifics, but it was another exciting escape from my favorite romance writer.

Incredible read!

Isla dean has a way of pulling you in to the lives of her characters like no other author I've read. She captures the deepest essence of their desires and fears while so playfully letting them give and receive of each other.
This suspenseful story kept me guessing and was exciting to read. Her character and scenic descriptions were vivid and her romantic moments so alive with passion.
I would recommend this book to anyone as it was exciting, suspenseful, and had delightfully juicy romantic scenes. Such an incredible read!

Highly recommended book, but even higher recommended author

This is my 4th book from the new writer; I absolutely love her writing style. It has the perfect blend of suspense and passion topped with a hearty splash of character. She has an incredible talent to draw you into the characters, they way she describes their love, their desires, their fears and their surroundings. It’s rare to find a writer that can immerse you into not just the characters, but also the beauty that surround them. Keep up the good work and I can’t wait for your next release.

Truly inspirational!

Gabriela's words touched my heart and will remain there for a long time, much like a tattoo. Her story is inspiring and proof positive that despite a tragedy, a person can rise above the pain and emerge on the other side, not only stronger herself, but also stronger for her family and strong enough to share her inspirational journey with all of us.

She continues to share her jouney with us in her second book "Deep in Thought" and I have been equally moved and inspired by her strength and her words. Her books make me thankful for every break in my own heart and grateful for every scar as her journey reminds me that these breaks and scars are opportunities for growth, learning and understanding.

Eleanor Roosevelt once said "A woman is like a tea bag- you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water." Gabriela is a perfect embodiment of that statement! Read her books and you too will feel and be inspired by her strength!

Inspirational!!!

This is the most touching personal and inspiring story I have read! I practically read it in one sitting because I just couldn't bear to walk away from the lives that were being revealed to me page by page. It will truly touch your heart.........its amazing how such a tragic event can transform a mom, a family into such an inspiration. How you find strength to keep going on beyond your wildest dreams and using that pain and new found strength to be an inspiration to others while helping heal yourself. It definitely makes you stop to realize how precious life is and how we must always take the time to appreciate every one in our lives!!!

Eye awakening

It's 1am and I just finished reading this book. It is a great reminder of how amazing life is and how we should be loving and respectful at all times to strangers and especially our loved ones. No matter what you believe in, have faith that at the complete end, you will be fine. There will always be obstacles but having the right tools, the right people by your side will help you over come any obstacle with time. God works in mysterious ways and Gabriela's life is proof to that. God bless everyone

About the Author
Tomas Akenine-Moller is a professor of computer science, specializing in computer graphics and image processing, at the Department of Computer Science, Lund University, Sweden. He received an MSc in Computer Science and Engineering from Lund in 1995, and a PhD in computer graphics from Chalmers University of Technology in 1998. In 2000 he was a post doc at UC Berkeley and he also spent time at UC San Diego (2004/2005) as a visiting researcher. Eric Haines is a Lead Software Engineer at Autodesk, Inc., working on a next-generation interactive rendering system for computer-aided design applications. He is currently an editor of the journal of graphics tools, online editor for ACM TOG, and maintainer of the Graphics Gems code repository, among other activities. He received an MS from the Program of Computer Graphics at Cornell in 1985. Naty Hoffman has been developing videogame graphics for over a decade. Previously he was a microprocessor architect at Intel. He has contributed to the development of numerous games as well as instruction set extensions, major graphics APIs, and processors. Naty is particularly interested in physically-based real-time rendering methods, on which he has published several articles and taught classes at SIGGRAPH, I3D, GDC and Meltdown.

perfect - concise, up-to-date review of realtime 3D graphics

This is my favorite 3D graphics book by a wide margin. The writing is clear, concise and quite up-to-date (assuming you have the most recent edition). Every page contains concise, unobtrusive references to 1200 excellent sources of information (books, articles, links). For example, if you see [987] in the text, just find entry [987] in the appendix to find the name of a book, article, link or PDF with more information.

What's best about this text is how well chosen and written are the topics. Their intention is always to describe the best up-to-date techniques to implement solutions to every aspect of real-time 3D graphics, with only enough general or historical discussion of each topic to provide a foundation to understand the current state-of-the-art. This is simply the perfect practical approach. Their complementary website is an absolute gold mine of references and advice.

If I could only buy one general book on 3D graphics, this would definitely be it. It is a perfect complement to special-purpose books on specific APIs (OpenGL or DirectX) or GPU shading languages (GLSL or CG or HLSL) that describe the specific graphics environment and software tools you need to implement your 3D applications. If your choice is OpenGL/GLSL, then "Realtime Rendering" is the perfect complement to the OpenGL SuperBible (4th~5th edition) and the OpenGL Shading Language (3rd edition).

Amazing book, very thorough, great overview of lots of topics

This is, by far, one of the most thorough books I've read on computer graphics. It has a great overview of a lot of different topics related to real-time rendering, from lighting models to collision detection, and all the math that is involved. Make no mistake, there is a lot of math in this book. I will be honest, on some pages with dense equations my eyes glazed over somewhat. But it is great to have the equations to refer back to, and there are ample references given if you want to find out more.

The thing to realize is that there is not a whole lot of code in this book. Sometimes pseudo-code will be giving, to illustrate an algorithm, but there is not stuff you can just copy and paste. If you are working on a 3D engine, this book should certainly be in your library, but you will need more to finish the job. So look to combine this book with one on your API of choice (OpenGL or DirectX) and another book that focuses on the architecture (I liked Game Engine Architecture by Jason Gregory).

All in all I think it was a great read, and I feel a lot more comfortable with the basic concepts of rendering after reading the book. If you are in the field, or looking to get into the field, this is basically required reading. Highly recommended.

Great book for intermediate and experienced graphics programmers

I chose this book because I wanted something that skips over the very basics, since I had already learned those while developing my own simple 3D game engine.

This book covers much more advanced topics such as Global Illumination and culling techniques, as well as offering a lot of detailed information about subtle issues, such as small but important differences between texture formats.

This book isn't a programming guide either - since it's past the basic level, it assumes the reader is familiar enough with his graphics programming environment to be able to implement the described techniques without needing step-by-step instructions.

It also comes with an insane number of references to other books and papers, which is of tremendous value. The associated website is also kept up-to-date and has an active blog maintained by the authors: http://www.realtimerendering.com/

This isn't a book for beginners, but once you're past the basics, I highly recommend it.

I SEEK THE TRUTH!

Holy cheet....mind blown. Only downside is, I could only understand half this book. But it was an awesome half. If you're really gifted in math, you can understand it all. I also had no interest in drawing the sacred geometry it guides you to, but its cool they teach you how to do it. The philosophy, history, and the math(that I could understand) of whats discussed in this book are pretty mind blowing in my opinion. For sure a good buy. Highly recommend.

This is more of a review of several geometric formula's used in ancient structures, and some modern art. The book is LIGHT on content, anyone with abit of research could had published this book, for someone somewhat familiar with the subject, this book will not be shedding any new light on the concept of many buildings being Geometrically designed. It is a decent book, but not very long.
