Review

"The authors of Law, Justice, and Society obviously understand the significance of introducing citizens to the idea that law is a basic social institution and that to study law is to study one's own society, heritage, and values. Any textbook on the subject which can inspire interest in, and understanding of, the study of law from this perspective is on the right track."--Mike Bogner, Chadron State College

Brick, by William Hall

Brick is a fresh, insightful and surprising look at one of the world’s most familiar and popular building materials. From the strange remains of the Ziggurat of Ur dating from 2100 BC, to formidable mills of the industrial revolution, the humble brick has been an architectural staple for centuries.

The world’s best architects have explored the qualities of brickwork. Alvar Aalto, Antoni Gaudi, Jrn Utzon, Frank Gehry, and Mies van der Rohe all built with the material, and bricks were integral to Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for an American vernacular in his Prairie Houses.

Lesser‐known newcomers have created some equally striking and memorable structures, from the stunning Winery Gantenbein – built by robotic arm – to the audacious Kantana Institute, an unprecedented vision in a Thai rainforest.

Brick is a beautiful and informative visual exploration of a material that is often overlooked, and sometimes considered limiting, but is actually full of spectacular potential.

Brick Pix
By Rob Hardy
As I was driving today I looked especially for brick buildings. There are lots of them, of course, houses and commercial buildings, mostly boxes with roofs, showing little about brick except its utility (which, of course, is no small thing). The reason I was paying attention to brick is that over the weekend I was looking through _Brick_ (Phaidon Press), a big, handsome book mostly of photographs of brick buildings. It is edited by designer William Hall (who did the similar book Concrete), with an introductory essay by art historian Dan Cruickshank. There are plenty of utilitarian buildings in the big photographs here, of course; none of these structures are mere ornaments. But the 200 photos here show useful buildings distinguished by colors, curves, and textures to show that the ancient building blocks have for centuries found new, beautiful, and even subtle applications.

Among the oldest structures here are the Ziggurat of Ur in Iraq, dating from around 2100 BC, an enormous pyramidal structure with flat terraces that looks worn on only some of its surfaces. It illustrates that brick lasts. Bricks are the oldest of man-made building materials, and they are made merely of humble earth. Making ornamental patterns with brick that is used primarily for construction is one of the themes here. It is done by using brick of different colors or shapes, but can be done also with simple block bricks, too. Rectangular bricks can be laid in spiral patterns, as in the complex screen for a building in New Delhi, India. There is an external spiral column in the Colegio Teresiano by Gaudi. Light and delicate diagonal hatchwork is on the Centre Michelet in Paris. Bricks can make large-scale or small-scale pixels; a cluster of room-sized cubes in a bank headquarters in Oslo has inspired a gamer to make a _Minecraft_ version of the building. Different sizes of rectangular bricks were used in the club and restaurant Lanxi Curtilage in China and laid in patterns that extend in a beautiful sinuous design, for all the orthogonality of the components. There is even a picture here of the Pixel House in South Korea, a family home that looks like a gigantic loaf, but none of the bricks is curved or set at an angle, so that the play of light on the surface looks like a digitized photo.

The pictures in this large-format book are gorgeous. The one difficulty is that they are allotted one picture per building, so it was very handy to use the photos here as starters for an internet image search. In his remarks at the beginning, Hall writes, “It wasn’t difficult to find remarkable brick architecture around the world, yet no illustrated books have been published on the subject for over a decade. This suggests that despite its ubiquity, brick is woefully underappreciated. I think it is time to reappraise - or perhaps repoint - our view of brick. This is the place to start.” Indeed.

Beautiful book. Amazing how something as simple as a brick has such an interesting story.

Brick, the mature substance
By Charles Coulter
Brick is beautiful. I also bought and recommend concrete, and tend to seek anything about the architecture of cabins, but brick is beautifully photographed in all its diversity; some of it exquisitely soft and organic looking. It has this look of returning to the earth, and the choices Mr. Hall puts on display celebrate it. Nice binding and layout as well. Easily worth the bucks.

Titans, by Victoria Scott

Ever since the Titans appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan's world has revolved around the mechanical horses. It's not just the thrill of the race. It's the engineering of the horses themselves and the way they're programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she'll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid's who wager on them.

But when Astrid's offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year's derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it's more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Seventeen-year-old Astrid Sullivan lives in Detroit with her family. Her grandfather lost their home in Wisconsin, and now her father is close to losing their home in Warren County. Betting on mechanical horses called "Titans" during the summer racing circuit is the vice that cripples families, including her own and her best friend's. Unemployed factory workers struggle, and betting seems to be their only way to survive. Astrid hates the racing circuit, but she can't help but be fascinated by the Titans. After a second chance encounter with an old man, Astrid is given the opportunity to race a Titan in the summer circuit and try to win the grand prize, something that would save her family from homelessness. This is a fun, fast-paced read. Astrid is a strong character anyone can identify with: she's headstrong and has trouble trusting those around her. But she has a can-do attitude that stems from her struggle to keep her family from falling apart. The races are very lively and action-packed. Perfect for fans of Maggie Stiefvater's The Scorpio Races (Scholastic, 2011) and Suzanne Collins's "The Hunger Games." VERDICT A fun addition to any library.—Faythe Arredondo, Tulare County Library, CA

Enjoyed This One
By Jamie @ Books and Ladders
Disclaimer: I read an ARC of this that I traded with Aly!

Okay so I really enjoyed this one. I thought it was a good mix of action and familial relationships and there was no unnecessary romance which was a huge plus for me. BUT I couldn't help but compare it to The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and because of that it, it was lacking something for me.

I liked Astrid and thought she was really strong and brave for doing what she did to keep her family together, especially her found family. I also really liked Magnolia because she stood by Astrid through thick and thin even when she was having problems of her own. And I liked their friendship: they bounced ideas off of one another, supported one another, and while they both had their own issues, they also helped the other in their time of need. Their relationship is the #1 reason I enjoyed this book. I love books that have positive female friendships and this is definitely one of them.

I also liked the secondary characters and getting to know the management team. They were so much more than just cardboard characters and they all had their own wants and desires. I really liked Rags and thought he played such an important role in Astrid's life.

I did think the introduction was a little bit sloppy and really just a way for Rags and Astrid to meet. But it felt forced and I was not really fond of how he was introduced and brought into Astrid's life. It felt too convenient for me to be really convinced. I also thought the races themselves were a bit lacking. As much as I was on the edge of my seat during them, it felt really repetitive and obvious what was going to happen because of how much book was left. It was like those episodes of Law & Order where they "find" the killer after 20 minutes and you're like "nope there is too much time left" if you know what I mean.

The whole idea of mechanical racing horses was cool though. I liked this and thought it was really well done. I liked that there were different models and how they worked. I thought this was clever and something that kept me really interested in the concept of the novel itself. But the horses themselves were awkward and difficult for me to picture. And the actual race tracks that weren't typical and had the jams were really hard for me to picture as well. I think they were described well enough but I feel like there was a missing piece for me to be really brought into Astrid's perspective and see what she was seeing.

But I didn't get a huge emotional connection to any of the characters or the horse, Padlock. I found myself not really caring if Astrid won or lost because she was a bit of a survivor and would probably have been okay if she had to move. I also thought Astrid's guilt was ... weird and like she placed a lot of weight on her shoulders for no reason. I feel like it would have been one thing if she was the only one there and had left her grandpa with no one but there were three other people at the house with him so I didn't understand her guilt at all.

Overall, this is a good novel. It has a lot of action and horse races and is interesting enough. But if you are looking for horse racing with a twist, I would pick up The Scorpio Races instead.

Titans by Victoria Scott
Publisher: Scholastic
Publication Date: February 23, 2016
Rating: 4 stars
Source: ARC sent by the publisher

Summary (from Goodreads):

Ever since the Titans first appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan’s world has revolved around the mechanical horses. She and her best friend have spent countless hours watching them and their jockeys practice on the track. It’s not just the thrill of the race. It’s the engineering of the horses and the way they’re programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she’ll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines to ride, and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid’s who wager on them.

But when Astrid’s offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year’s derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it’s more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

What I Liked:

I must say, Victoria Scott writes books for me. I don't think I've been disappointed yet, and this is my sixth book I've read by her. There is something very refreshing about her writing style, and I'm pretty sure it accurately reflects her as a person. I adore the voice of Scott's characters, and the tone of all her books - humorous and heartwarming.

Astrid has always been fascinated with the Titans, but she knows that the closest she'll ever get to them is on the other side of the fence of the track, watching. Those who are rich can afford a Titan, as well as the fees to enter the Titan Races. But this year, the fifth year of the races, Astrid is offered the chance to race a first edition prototype of a Titan. Astrid needs the two-million-dollar prize money to help her family keep their home, as well as to help her best friend Magnolia's family. Can Astrid go the distance with the Titan? Or will she risk herself - her life - in the process?

The beginning of the story, before Astrid gets the opportunity with the Titan, was a bit slow. The author does an excellent job of setting the scene, the tone of the story, but I wanted the pace to move a little. When Astrid meets Rags, the older man with the old Titan, the story starts to pick up.

It's not long before Astrid is training on the Titan (nicknamed "Padlock"), and running in the preliminary and qualifying races. She needs to secure a sponsor, and she does, in the form of Lottie, who apparently knows Rags (and Barney, who is friends with Rags). This book goes through race after race, and each race gets more challenging and daunting and risky.

There are so many characters in this book, and I really liked nearly all of them. Astrid is bold and temperamental and stubborn. Magnolia, Astrid's best friend, is creative and fun. Rags, Astrid's manager, is grouchy and stubborn too. Barney, friend of Rags and former engineer of Titans, is good-humored and kind. Lottie, the sponsor, is honest and a paragon of class. Hart Riley II, one of the jockeys and competitors of Astrid, is hilarious and charming and wicked.

I adore Astrid and Magnolia's relationship! They are best friends, and this never wavers throughout the story. Magnolia and her family is just as badly off as Astrid's - Magnolia's father was also laid off, and they are close to losing their home. Yet Magnolia is determined to support Astrid while Astrid is training and racing. And Astrid is determined to win the races not only to get the money to help her own family, but also Magnolia's. This book has such a strong female friendship, which I really liked!

Speaking of relationships - there is little to no romance in this book. At least, not for Astrid. There are other characters that find some romance, but unfortunately, our main character is not one of them. You could take this as a positive aspect or a negative one! It'll appear as both, in my review. I like that Astrid stood on her own, in this story. But I also wouldn't have minded some romance.

I adored Padlock! And the Titans aspect in general. I personally haven't read anything with this concept before (I've seen some people compare this idea to The Scorpio Races? I've not read the book, so I wouldn't know). The author does an excellent job with the world-building, setting the scene, providing sufficient information about the mechanics of the steel horses. Padlock specifically is a wonderful fixture in the story.

I won't say more on the plot because this book is a standalone, and wraps up neatly, as a standalone might. I thought the ending was satisfying, like I said, wraps up neatly. I enjoyed the fast pace of the story, the races, the lovely characters, and the strong female friendship. As well as large secrets and intriguing history!

What I Did Not Like:

I already said this but I was kind of sad that there was no romance centering around Astrid! I mean, I think it's great that a story can stand without having romance; not every female character needs to have a man next to her (or whatever, so on). BUT, I thought for sure that the author was going to go in a certain direction, with Astrid and a secondary character. But she didn't, and I was honestly very disappointed. I think, maybe if this hadn't been insinuated at all, I wouldn't have been bothered by the "no romance" aspect. It's totally okay not to have romance in a book! But not okay if you imply it between two characters and then that doesn't actually happen.

Would I Recommend It:

I personally like all of Scott's books, and I think this one is probably among my favorites of hers, if not my favorite. I love that it is a standalone! No merciless ending or horrible waiting for the next book. The story stands on its own and was worth the read - especially in terms of the female friendship! I loved the amount of girl power in this book. I don't necessarily think this story is a must-read, but it won't disappoint!

Rating:

3.5 stars -> rounded up to 4 stars. I love a story about a girl who overcomes all kind of odds and circumstances in order to walk among those who consider themselves her betters! I also love a story that keeps me guessing until the very end. Lovely work by the author!

A really unique, futuristic take on horse racing. Also a comment on family struggles all too common in this day and age.

A valuable contribution to the debate over nuclear power, this book documents the Fermi accident that so frightened the AEC and nuclear industry that they did not want the details and significance leaked to the public. At the time of the publication of this book, many critics of nuclear power were demanding to know all the pertinent information regarding the safety of nuclear reactors.

Worth Reading...
By Amazon Customer
As someone that can see the steam towers of Fermi 2 from my driveway, I was very interested in this book. Although it is very outdated and quite biased, it did turn me on to some reactor accidents I hadn't heard of and gave me a little more history of the area I live in. The accident at Fermi 1 was actually pretty small and the plant still runs (actually visited it 5 years ago). A good place to start if you are interested in this kind of thing and the book sells pretty cheap so it is worth the small amount of money.

We Almost Lost Tokyo--too
By Dr. Morbius
I found a paperback copy of this book in a used bookstore recently. While Fuller was a masterful storyteller, his science was shoddy which renders this book largely an exercise in "what if" thrill seeking and fear mongering. As in: What if radiation from U.S. and French H-bomb tests in the Pacific really mutated a never-before-known sea monster on the scale of Godzilla? What then, we ask, would have happened to downtown Tokyo when the monster came ashore? Recall the author's popular, bestselling book "The Interrupted Journey"? It supported Betty and Barney Hill's alleged 1961 alien abduction claims as revealed under hypnosis. Need we say more about Mr. Fuller's credibility as a skilled science writer? The author here prefers to focus on wild "what ifs" of a nuclear power plant accident that didn't even affect an area outside of the massive concrete containment structure of the Enrico Fermi Power Station. Ok, the reactor damage here was significant, but the breeder reactor as designed and described in the book could never have reached critical mass to explode like a nuclear bomb; not even close. The claim by the author is bogus and physically impossible. Fuller did not have any academic background in nuclear physics because in the case of this 1966 incident at Fermi 1, the engineered-in safety systems worked as designed, just as they did at Three Mile Island 13 years later. There's no need for handwringing of what might have happened or need to cite Chernobyl or Fukishima (those were two very different reactor design types with two very different accident scenarios as played out). Yes, we almost lost Detroit, but it was far more recently than the year 1966. Blame Detroit's near miss not on a "what if" core meltdown scenario, but rather on the "meltdown" of mismanagement--malfeasance and crony politics that can be traced right back to Detroit's legacy of corrupt and partisan city officials.

We almost lost . . . a secret.
By Glows by night
Granted the book is a bit sensational - then again I lived in Detroit at that time and you can bet I would have been hyper-ventilating had I known the China Syndrome was potentiating less than 60 miles away.

Here's the key point: if this was such an itty-bitty bang why was it NEVER mentioned until this book was published?

Rancho Seco, Celilo Village, the Hanford site, 3-mile Island, the USS Thresher -- all nuclear events that blew up in the press for days or weeks - yet NEVER CALLED FORTH A SINGLE MENTION OF FERMI #1.

Sounds like a cover-up to me - and the casual mention that 'a little bit of the core melted' is no small matter - if a little melts, a lot is not far behind and Bang! There goes Detroit!

Worth a read? Yeah. Worth paying attention to the neighborhood, too.

This book contains about 500 exercises consisting mostly of special cases and examples, second thoughts and alternative arguments, natural extensions, and some novel departures. With a few obvious exceptions they are neither profound nor trivial, and hints and comments are appended to many of them. If they tend to be somewhat inbred, at least they are relevant to the text and should help in its digestion. As a bold venture I have marked a few of them with a * to indicate a 'must' although no rigid standard of selection has been used. Some of these are needed in the book, but in any case the reader's study of the text will be more complete after he has tried at least those problems.

By Linda Sereda
This book is very informative, especially about how to eat meatless meals, yet get all the protein you need. It has many recipes for dishes which you can make without meat but which are protein-rich. She gives the combinations of vegetables and/or dairy which, combined, make a perfect protein. This is very useful for students or others on a small budget who can't afford to buy a lot of meat.

Thought-provoking
By Richard Middleton
One-star reviews of this book seem to focus on whether recent science has disproved some of its assertions, or whether the recipes are any good. There's even a somewhat vituperative stream on climate change, diet links to blood groups, and other contentious issues.
For me, these are essentially peripheral and miss the point. I have spent most of my professional life concerned with trying to improve people's conditions in developing countries. So what resonated with me was the theme that America's devotion to excess protein has severe adverse implications not just for how the rest of the world eats but also on much broader issues such as food security, international trade and balance of payments.
Of course, it would be comforting to be sure that the author's statements are rigorous and based on fact (I'm an engineer, and we prefer to avoid vague assertions) . But ultimately whether, for example, protein complementarity is valid is of less importance than the general principle that we need to eat lower down the food chain, and that there are excellent ways of doing so without necessarily becoming a complete vegetarian. The 20th Edition is now itself over 20 years old, and doubtless outdated in many ways, but it serves to spark inquiry and debate about a very important subject - and along the way provides some recipes well worth exploring!

An oldie but a goodie.
By cinnamon
Unfortunately the copy of this book that a bought I the seventies ( yes, really!) went missing. It was in pretty bad shape anyhow, I HAD to have the wonderful tomato rice soup one day so I went ahead and bought an e- copy.
I am not a vegetarian but try to eat healthy and I have enjoyed many of the recipes through the years. If you make nothing else make the tomato rice soup (like Campbell's never dreamed of). You probably have most, if not all the ingredients in you kitchen, and there is nothing better on a cold winter day than a hearty soup that you didn't have to go out in the cold to shop for.
The first part of the book makes a good argument for going vegetarian.
