I was trying to find a book here on Amazon about French Christmas cooking when I stumbled upon this book. In fact, I thought there were some recipes in the book, but there is only a vague explanation of a couple dishes. However, that took nothing away from my enjoyment of this wonderful book!

The author's writing was very approachable, and allows the reader to run through the book. The story, however, was amazing and inspirational. It is filled with personal anecdotes from his life as he tells the journey of putting together a Christmas dinner for a traditional French family who knows their way around the kitchen. These short narratives might seem like filler to some, but I thought they were what gave the novel life, from his friend's experience of a Napoleon era wine, his trip to India for spices, and, in particular, his amazing daughter Louise.

While reading this book, Louise reminded me of the light that Pearl brought to the "Scarlet Letter." I am probably over-emphasizing her involvement in the novel, but her sophistication shines through and represents the character of France that is exhibited throughout the novel. Plus, as a 19-year-old, I am able to see how other people of the same age live in other parts of the world.

But, I digress, as the main story is just as fascinating to imagine, which in particular has inspired me to try and replicate such an event, sadly without the Roast Suckling Pig! So, if you are looking for a quick read for the weekend, with an insight into the French and their cooking, I cannot see how you could wrong with A Paris Christmas!

Baxter's books are all the same, an ode to the wonderful life he has in a wonderful city filled with wonderful people. Unfortunately all his books are the same and you'll find a lot of the stories repeated in his books. This one revolves around him cooking Christmas dinner for his wife's wonderful family at their wonderful house and his putting together the menu from wonderful ingredients...blah, blah, blah.

Ellmann's account of Wilde's extravagantly operatic life as poet, playwright, aesthete, and martyr to sexual morality is notable not only for the full portrait it gives of Wilde, but also for Ellmann's assessment of his subject's literary greatness; both aims are served by a plethora of quotations from Wilde's own work and correspondence. The Full Sum of the Man, His Work and His Times

With this volume, Richard Ellmann elevates Oscar Wilde into the select circle of Ireland's other literary giants of whom he wrote so eloquently: William Butler Yeats and James Joyce. (It was left to Michael Holroyd to give George Bernard Shaw his due.) While this volume is a sophisticated, wide-ranging, scholarly biography, it also brims with Wilde's wit and bold life, which, as Oscar himself pointed out, was where his genius lay. The slow, steady accumulation of detail, allusion and anecdote pays off as Wilde reaches his pinnacle--the original production of "The Importance of Being Earnest"--only to plunge into the abyss of imprisonment. As Wilde tempts fate with rough trade dalliances and his ill-conceived challenge to the Marquess of Queensbury, you find yourself almost shouting out for him to stop and save himself. But he doesn't, because Ellmann makes us understand that Wilde's nature led him to that point. The end is sad, but his wit never deserts him, right up until his death throes when he notes that either the wallpaper in the room must go or he must--which he does shortly thereafter. Today, qualities that Wilde pioneered are a part of modern life: camp humor, scathing put-downs, an emphasis on style, an obsession with appearances. In Wilde's day, he was an almost solitary figure in that regard, leading the way into the modern world. The witticisms of "The Importance of Being Earnest" are as humorous and apt today as the day they were first spoken in London in 1895. Richard Ellmann helps us understand why.

Likely to stand as the definitive biography of Wilde

If Richard Ellmann had not already written the definitive literary biography (his astonishing JAMES JOYCE), this utterly first-rate biography would be a legitimate candidate for the title. One might initially think that Wilde would be an easy subject for a biography: his life was interesting, eventful, literarily significant, triumphant, and tragic. But the problem is that for many Wilde has become a symbol either of the late 19th century Victorian decadence or the oppressed homosexual. To treat anyone, and especially Wilde, primarily as a symbol or a representative of anything outside himself, is to distort and misrepresent. The genius of Ellmann's biography of Wilde is that Wilde never becomes either more or less than the writer and person Oscar Wilde.
The portrait that emerges of Wilde is absolutely fascinating. If Ellmann's JAMES JOYCE is the greater biography, Wilde emerges nonetheless as the more interesting of the two Irish authors, and perhaps the more brilliant, if not the more productive. Indeed, one of the things that emerges from Ellmann's book is a sense that Wilde might have become a greater writer than he did, and not just if he had not sued the Marquess of Queensbury and had not been sent to prison on sodomy charges. Wilde emerges as even more brilliant than the work he produced, as if he had produced much of his work with a minimum of reference.
Ellmann does a marvelous job of situation Wilde in his time and place, with the cultural and artistic concerns paramount at the time. He also does a fair and just job of depicting the major involvements in his life, beginning with Whistler and his wife Constance and continuing on with his various involvements, especially with Alfred Lord Douglas. With the latter, Ellmann certainly does not try to idealize the relationship, but recounts it warts and all. If there is a villain in the book, it is not, surprisingly, the Marquess of Queensbury, but his son Lord Douglas.
The saddest part of the book, by far, is the section recounting Wilde's life after leaving prison, which is one disappointment after another. He first intended to reunite and reconcile with his wife, but she unexpectedly died, thereby cutting himself off from both a family and his children. He then reunites uncomfortably with Lord Douglas, but the attempt is a disaster. He final year or two are recounted as being especially miserable, with an impoverished Wilde reduced to conversing entertainingly with strangers for the benefit of a drink. It is especially heartbreaking to read how almost all his former friends cut him off, refusing to help him in his time of greatest need. An encounter with a young man from Arkansas provides perhaps the most apt Wilde quote from his last days. Upon hearing about Arkansas, Wilde remarked, "I would like to flee like a wounded hart into Arkansas."
One learns a vast amount of fascinating biographical detail about Wilde's life from this book. For instance: Wilde was double-jointed, could speed read and knock off books in scarcely more than a half hour in some instances. He was acquainted with the Yeats family in Ireland, and spoke with a pronounced Irish accent until he went to Oxford. He bought Thomas Carlyle's writing desk. He was a Mason. Physically he had tiny feet and teeth that were darkened by mercury treatments. And there is much, much more.
On nearly every level, this is a truly great biography. Even if one is not a fan of Wilde's works, it is definitely worth reading.

INCREDIBLY COMPREHENSIVE AND MOVING

I bought this book after seeing the movie, "Wilde" which is based on it. I have to say that I caught a bit of "Oscar Fever" while reading it. The book is incredibly thorough and well-researched; Ellman definitely knows his stuff. The book is written in an admiring, respectful tone but remains objective. Excerpts from Wilde's works that the author found particularly significant are included, as well as many wonderful pictures.
After reading this book I have a lot of admiration and fondness for Wilde, and I marvel at his fascinating but ultimately tragic life. A couple of months before I read this book I was wandering around the cemetery de Pere-Lachaise in Paris and happened upon Wilde's grave. I didn't think too much of it then but now that I have learned a bit about the man I really do want to go back and pay my respects. Ellman has written a beautiful, loving portrait of Wilde and it is thoroughly enjoyable and poignant. I'd also recommend the wonderful film starring Stephen Fry and Jude Law but to get the whole story, read the book!!!

Roger D. Blair is Walter J. Matherly Professor and Chair of the Department of Economics at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1970. Book Challenges "Uncle Tom's Cabin"

This is a book written in the mid-nineteenth century to combat the book written by Julia Ward Howe, "Uncle Tom's Cabin." Aunt Phillis's Cabin tells the southern story, not really justifying slavery but explaining that most southerners treated their charges well. The book is still in print as is Howe's book. Reading the two together would be a good exercise for students while learning about the Civil War. They would create good discussions in class.

Loved Battle Buddies, and loved Tuck & Cover too! I enjoyed seeing Owen's side of things, you get much more detail in this version. He is out to drive Tuck crazy, and does, but in a goooood way! The writing was great, the story was good, not a lot of drama, just lots of Ranger life, which was fine. It didn't need lots of drama. The sex between Owen and Tuck was fast and hot, exactly the way I like it! Looking forward to following more of these boys.....

I love these guys and Tuck and Cover did not disappoint.
Another goodread in the Rough Rangers series. I don't know how Jo does it but the feelings shared and love not to mention HOT love scenes are wonderful.
The way she incorporated the title into the story really choked me up.

I absolutely loved this book! "Battle Buddy" was the story of Tuck and Owen meeting and getting together, told from Tuck's point-of-view (POV). After reading Tuck's "diary" of events in "Battle Buddy," Owen decided he wanted his story to be heard as well; hence, us very lucky readers now have "Tuck & Cover."

For me, I love reading books written in first person POV. I feel like I become more connected to the main character telling the story, and I feel for him/her so much more than I normally do when written in third person POV. Not always, but a lot. The downfall to first person POV, however, is that while we get to hear what other characters might say, or see what they do, we miss out on their thoughts, their insight, and the inner workings of their actions. Well, Peterson has so graciously provided her readers with both. We were able to closely connect with Tuck in "Battle Buddy," but now in "Tuck & Cover," we get to hear Owen's thoughts about falling for Tuck, and all that he was thinking throughout his time in Basic and Rangers' training, and the processing of his attraction for Tuck.

What I found interesting is that while Owen loved to do things to drive Tuck mad, he was going through some of the same internal grief that we previously saw Tuck having. Owen has known for a long time that he was gay; however, from the time of early childhood, it was engrained in him that he would grow up to be an Army Ranger, and that is what he sets out to do. But his attraction to Tuck has other plans. So as much as he tries to focus on his training, to fulfill his Ranger dreams, Tuck keeps coming to the forefront of his thoughts, and finally, he gives into that attraction.

The beauty of "Tuck & Cover" is that while we get Owen's POV for a lot we saw in "Battle Buddy," Owen takes it a little bit further, so we get new aspects to their story as well, and holy hot tamale, are those some fabulous parts!! We see Owen in a role that he doesn't often portray, but he sums it up so beautifully: "And hey, I found out that day I had a new kink. Power Bottom!" Oh yeah!!!!

In addition to the very, very hot sexy time, we get to see more wonderful development between these amazing fellows. Their chemistry is off the charts, and their antagonistic, but equally playful, interactions are great fun to watch unfold. They are also so very sweet with each other, especially with their non-Christmas presents to each other.

"Tuck & Cover" doesn't finish the tale for these Rangers, but it ends with a teaser of where their story takes them next. Once again, Peterson does an amazing job in this fabulously told novella, ramps up the hotness factor, and leaves the reader ecstatic with the growth between Tuck and Owen. I am waiting on pins and needles to see what happens next!

The really JSF book for begginers

I was searching for a good book to learn JSF from zero and after reading a lot of them I think I can say this is the one.

Things to thank for:

a) The book covers all the basics topics needed without requiring to complicate things
b) Is writen in a friendly language
c) The learning curve of the book is really smooth
d) The Zoran story is fun and interesting

Things to improve (subjectibly)

a) I dont know why the author use for the examples the oracle database (Oracle 11g) and not themost easy and extensive MySQL
b) Eclipse could be replaced for NetBeans wich in my opinion is 100 better (super subjectibly speaking)
c) The project or "case study" is not very relevant, I would prefer the case study to be a a blog or a shopping cart or even a forum instead.

Overall: I think this is a very good book for JSF starters, after finishing this one you will be able to read some others without getting lost.

Received this yesterday and instantly read it from cover to cover- fabulous! HTBABB is full of REAL wisdom about how to hold your own in a world of double standards and mixed messages. The book is well done with beautiful photo spreads and contains lots of Amber's unique personal commentary in the form of stories which I loved reading. I admire that Amber's voice really shines in this book from her humor to her brutal honesty about handling negativity and jealousy. The "10 rules to live by" though simple is something that many women forget to follow, 1. hold your head high 2. always smile 3. be kind to people serving you in any way (waiters, beauticians, anyone) 4. always listen more than you talk 5. know when to leave a situation when you're not wanted 6. never hide your needs, including food! no one likes a h(angry) girl 7. think before opening your mouth 8. no yelling 9. if you mess up- own it, apologize (pride kills relationships) 10. never be a hater- compliment other women! The dominant message that emerges in HTBABB that you should always hold your head high, act with class and focus on making yourself happy while lifting others up as well. Jealously and negativity is the most unattractive attitude a woman can have and it ultimately will hold you back from pursuing your dreams and affect your romantic relationships. HTBABB is the modern anthem of empowerment and a useful guide for any woman wanting to understand her feminine power and get what she wants out of life. I'm 100% team Amber.

Disappointing and useless

As a fan of Amber Rose, I was astonished (well, not *entirely* astonished) by how bad this book was.

Upon initially ordering the book, I was excited to hear autobiographical details of Amber's life - as well as her genuine advice on various topics. Most of the book is honestly unreadable. Although I obviously wasn't expecting the writing prowess of Steinbeck, it's written so badly that I feel like I'm reading one of my angsty diary entries from when I was in middle school. Also, the entire thing is triple-spaced and interspersed with blown-up iPhone selfies of Amber - stretching out one page of material into five pages.

Additionally, the "advice" (if you can call it that) is awful. Amber is rarely honest in the book - she spends every other sentence telling the reader to "love themselves" and "be themselves" - the type of advice you've heard for years. It's hardly revolutionary - which is extremely disappointing - as Amber prides herself on blazing the travels for embracement of female sexuality. I wanted to hear her true and honest thoughts on this subject - and instead, we get some ghost-written cookie-cutter mantra that hardly pushes a PG rating.

If you want an extremely large (and heavy) book filled with mediocre and pixelated iPhone photos of Amber interspersed with extremely vague feel-good compliments, then this is for you. If not, I can safely say you will be fine giving this a miss.

Yes muva!

I got the audible version of the book. I'm on my second round listening to it. Its good. I love her positive attitude in the beginning and the way she let's the reader know she never gave up on her dream and that anyone else can accomplish theirs too w persistence and vision. She talks about her childhood and growing up in Philadelphia. There's humility in this book which I appreciate. One of the things that I really appreciate about Amber Rose is that she's not a snob about her fame, she doesn't use it for selfish or vain reasons. She's always seem like a down to earth person. It's of value in our society nowadays. I love her raw nature and a stance on femininity and her views on anti slut shaming. I also appreciate the fact that she talks about where she has fallen short and about how she has forgiven herself and moved on and has not let that hold her back in achieving her goals. It gives the reader a sense of redemption. This book has an urban vibe. I'd recommend this book to young women. Fans of amber. I look forward to seeing how she grows in the media and where she will take her new found fame and upcoming. This isn't a tell all which I liked so don't expect gossip. But it is in a else a manual. And a bit of a biography.
