The book visits historical locales from Puritan New England and French Louisiana to nineteenth-century New York and Mississippi, all the way to Harlem swing clubs and college campuses in the twentieth century. In the process, authors listen to the voices of abolitionists and white supremacists, preachers and politicos, white farm women and black sorority sisters, slaves, and jazz musicians.

Each essay represents an important contribution to the collection's larger themes and at the same time illustrates the impact Jordan exerted on the scholarly life of each author. Collectively, these pieces demonstrate the attentiveness to detail and sensitivity to sources that are hallmarks of Jordan's own work.

Must reading for sequence stratigraphers,

The title may be slightly misleading and even off-putting but do not put down this book. The authors summarize several years of research done at Colorado State University. This reasearch has allowed them to develop some powerful process models which explain the evolution of fluvial systems over time. These models, while derived from flume work, apply well to the real world. Observations discussed and inferences put forth by the authors have been documented in the field by researchers for companies such as Exxon. They fit quite well with the sequence stratigraphic ideas found in the professional literature published by AAPG and SEPM (to name a few). Every geologist who wishes to become a competent stratigrapher should read this book. A great follow-up to Schumm's earlier book 'The Fluvial System.' CJ

Drawing on recently opened Soviet archives and other sources, Thurston shows that between 1934 and 1936 police and court practice relaxed significantly. Then a series of events, together with the tense international situation and memories of real enemy activity during the savage Russian Civil War, combined to push leaders and people into a hysterical hunt for perceived "wreckers." After late 1938, however, the police and courts became dramatically milder. Coercion was not the key factor keeping the regime in power. More important was voluntary support, fostered at least in the cities by broad opportunities to criticize conditions and participate in decision making on the local level. The German invasion of 1941 found the populace deeply divided in its judgment of Stalinism, but the country's soldiers generally fought hard in its defense. Using German and Russian sources, the author probes Soviet morale and performance in the early fighting. Thurston's portrait of the era sheds new light on Stalin and the nature of his regime. It presents an unconventional and less condescending view of the Soviet people, depicted not simply as victims but also as actors in the violence, criticisms, and local decisions of the 1930s. Ironically, Stalinism helped prepare the way for the much more active society and for the reforms of fifty years later.

The author is not grounded in reality

Robert Thurston maintains that the Stalinist terror was almost, not quite, an optical illusion. This is an example of poor scholarship, because a vast ocean of memoirs and novels of survivors reveal the horrible reality of those times. Generations of meticulous, brilliant and insightful scholars support the accounts related by survivors. Finally, the opening of the secret Russian archives provides final confirmation, if that is even needed.

A fresh look at an old story.

Robert W. Thurston has been accused of revisionism in his reassessment of the Stalinist Great Terror. But this is a story that needs revision, in light of the sweeping generalities that have become embedded dogma in Western cold war scholarship. In this official view, Stalin is seen as the great mastermind plotting every evil that befell Soviet society during his reign. When this faith is subjected to critical analysis and does not hold up - that Stalin did not plot the great famine, or the invasion by Hitler - then the official line retreats into theories of pathology or "just plain evil." Calculations of advantage, and responses to real external events, is left out of the equation. Professor Thurston has restored the rational in his new study and is to be welcomed for said reason.

Far from "apologizing" for Stalin, Thurston seeks to place the Gensec's actions in the context of time and circumstance. Stalin counted on the class hostility of ordinary workers for Party leaders and intellectuals; in this he turned the latent anti-Communism still smoldering in the country against the purge victims and unified the country around his leadership. A very important factor, which Thurston only marginally alludes to, is the Spanish Civil War. The search for Fifth Columnists in Madrid, beginning in July, 1936, immediately inspired the same reaction in Moscow by August. This was of course a convenient cover for the "cadre revolution" he had already anticipated, but it had an objective justification for what otherwise would have been unjustifiable or even suicidal - just as the invasion of the USSR was Hitler's war cover for the Holocaust.

I recommend Professor Thurston's work as a necessary - although not perfect - antidote to the prevailing consensus of convenience among Western academics. His reconstruction of the time and circumstances is impeccable, and his detractors need to consider his closing remarks - that without the background of extreme brutalization from 1914 to 1921, Stalinism and the Great Terror were unthinkable. They were not endemic to either Russian tradition or socialist theory. "There was never a long period of Stalinism without a serious foreign threat, major internal dislocation, or both," Thurston writes, "which makes identifying its true nature impossible. . . . [its] direction broken by unplanned events. Of course Stalin contributed much to the maliciousness of the period, but he did not need to rule by terror."

Thurston concludes that the Soviet people co-determined their own fate by opportunistically siding with power. There is a warning for us in "the free world" of "the democracies" as well, for having taken a few downward steps into that cellar ourselves.

good scholarship,poor analysis and judgement

In many ways, Professor Thurston's scholarship is very credible for the time he wrote the book. But his use of sources seems very selective, facile, and often misleading. I am not an expert on Russian/Soviet history and culture, though I have read in it for almost 25 years and taught courses in Russian culture at the university. I must admit, however, that I was amazed to read his analysis of Kirov, Ezhov, and Tukhachevski, among others in the Stalinist era. They did not resemble any of the men I had read about in works by great scholars like Tucker, Volkogonov, Conquest, Orlando Figes, Hingley and Amy Knight, for example.

His portrayal of Stalin is the most incredible mish-mash of hypotheses I've read. He does admit that Stalin had, to quote him, "a suspicious mind." Suspicious mind? Surely he must be joking. What is most disturbing, and perhaps this is his own personal revisionist history, is that Stalin was merely reacting to circumstances. He, for example, dismisses the idea that Stalin had a hand in the murder of Kirov, among other reasons because Kirov got 13.5% of the vote at the party congress in '34.(True, as Amy Knight points out in her excellent book on the Kirov murder, there is no document with Stalin's name on it. But that does not mean Stalin was not responsible. Does anyone believe Hitler was not responsible for the Holocaust because there is no document with his name on it?) If you assume Stalin was not paranoid as Professor Thurston seems to believe, that may be true. But if he was paranoid, for which there seems to be some very substantial evidence, then the numbers would have been more than enough to set off a purge of Kirov and his Leningrad supporters, though not necessarily the Great Terror, as Professor Figes has pointed out in The Whisperers.

Another objection I have is about how he uses sources. He claims that using one source is not sufficient evidence in one case to support one of his contentions, but he then only uses one source, and a very dubious one,to claim that Tukhachevski really had formed a conspiracy to kill Stalin!!! Though in a later paragraph, he does claim, there was the testimony of two men who had been tortured to give evidence...all of which Stalin presumably knew nothing about until Ezhov told him. It appears as Thurston imples that Ezhov was essentially duping Stalin. Or conversely trying to frighten him for unnamed reasons of his own. Poor Stalin. Who could he trust if not Ezhov? Beria? Of course, Professor Thurston offers no plausible evidence for the claim that the General's Plot, which presumably started in 1932, was grounded in reality either. And why would the generals have started to plot against Stalin then? It makes no sense, or at least he gives no real evidence or theory to explain it, unless he thinks they were all Trotsky dupes. (But to show Stalin's good will, Professor Thurston mentions two commanders who were saved in the purges!!!)

And that is the problem with the book. Alas, here is an academic with the ability to produce a scholarly work that deserves genuine credit for scholarship, but that draws the most extraordinary and unsubstantiated conclusions.

Perhaps, though, we have all been wrong? Unlike Roosevelt and Churchill, who more or less thought that Uncle Joe was really not a bad guy, the rest of us have been mistaken to think Uncle Joe was not actually such a nice guy after all, with his "suspicious mind"?

So it’s a “must read” for young new leaders (and not just pastors) of today. Now that I'm looking at a change in direction for future ministry, this book and Reggie McNeal’s book, THE PRESENT FUTURE: Six Tough Questions, gives me the courage to take the next step and make the paradigm changes necessary to be an apostolic leader that our new culture and world demands. Now maybe I’ll be free to do what God has really been calling me to!

Enlightened Book on strategically getting what you really want - appealing to a higher sense of good and love

This is a book on arguing written by a lawyer, but it is sooo much more than that. It is a book on deciding on the outcome you want, and being enlightened, loving, human and decent in your pursuit of that goal. Having gotten divorced in a legal system where honesty was a losing strategy, I loved seeing that the strategies in this book (written in 1986) might have once worked in a better justice system of a different time. However, this is a book that is almost about enlightenment - about arguing to express love, about arguing to get an outcome that brings you closer to a party rather than increasing distance, about arguing to win something decent. I wish this was required reading for all lawyers and judges, and for all parties to a lawsuit, to elevate the level of the discussion and to bring the focus back on what really is desired, rather than the common course of "the lawyers made $300k and no real results got achieved" that is often the outcome of lawyer brokered contentiousness.

Successful Communication a Lawyer’s Perspective

This book is not about how to set up a winning argument providing the best evidence and the best logical case. It is about getting what you want as you communicate with others. People are emotional beings that focus not just on weighing the presented evidence. People have self interests, they are prejudiced, there are emotions and desires, group associations, and then there’s body language, and to get what you want they have to like you, etc. When you argue a case in court, or at home or at work, or to any group of people, you have to consider all of that.

Very briefly; you have to prepare, you have to listen to the other, you have to understand the other, find common ground, and you have to be credible. Therefore you should not avoid emotions and your argument should be personal, and you must always be truthful. Our argument cannot be perceived as a threat or we will never be heard, and assault is not argument. He discusses how to deal with prejudice and hostility and tells us that sometimes losing is winning and sometimes an argument shouldn’t be made at all. He also mentions that telling personal stories is a good way of getting people to see things your way. In addition to advice and guidelines there’s also quite a bit of wisdom and personal opinions, some of which I agree with and some of which I don’t agree with.

One thing I object to is that he sometimes overextends his perspective. For example, there are arguments, or communications, which should avoid emotions and for which the people involved and even their perceived credibility should not matter. I am talking about peer review in natural science and mathematical discourse, which I see as the best path towards “truth”. In that case only the evidence matter and the data and mathematical derivations speak for itself. However, that is outside of his expertise, like so much else that is outside of his expertise. That’s why I titled my review “A Lawyer’s Perspective”.

That does not mean it is not a good book. The book is filled with useful insights and I learned a lot from the book. One of the things I learned from this book is that if I know a lot about a subject and I am arguing with someone who’s very misinformed but stubborn I must resist the temptation to be patronizing, or to crush them. My goal should be to inform them, not to make them hate me. That was just one of many examples of what I’ve learned reading this book. I highly recommend this book.

a non-standard approach in dealing with oponents of seemingly superior intelligence

Using the paradigms in this book, I have conquered many opponents I was reluctant to deal with before due to (mostly) fear. The author has a non-standard approach to creating argumentative energy seemingly out of nothing. If you have the patience to wade through his tree-hugging stuff you will become empowered just by reading some paragraphs about the human weaknesses. If you don't understand what tree-hugging means, it may also be the key to your inability to win some arguments before and is key to unlocking your potential.
Once we understand how to handle our weaknesses and use the power of higher moral ground, truth and integrity we become invincible.
Btw, if you simply want to learn about logical fallacies - get a school book. Simply knowing the logical fallacies didn't help him much in the court cases he tried. He is just cynical enough to convey the reality of life but is not fixated on it while providing all the tools to prepare you for the B.S. that gets thrown at you every day.
There's another book I know of that uses eastern philosophy and some martial arts techniques in dealing with problems - "Aikido in Everyday Life: Giving in to Get Your Way" by Terry Dobson and Victor Miller. In some ways the books are identical.
