About the Author
Durba Ghosh is Assistant Professor in History at Cornell University. She has co-edited, with Dane Kennedy, Decentering Empire: Britain, India and the Transcolonial World (2006).

O I wish to know more

The British raj wasn't all tiger hunts and teas, or Rolls Royce cars for the marharajas, there are a lot of bad things to be said of the Empire and how it ruled and misruled. Alas hardly anything is known about the Indian women the englishmen in India cohabitated with, the Bibi of Legend, not where they come from beyond they were either Hindu or Moslem, not much of their backround other than the occasional widow plucked from her late husband's funeral pyre by some English adventurer. No names, no backgrounds, a lot of blank pages in need of filling in but this book does try to fill in those pages with what little information there is to be found.
This book is about these women, this is their book, and a good source of information for those who are interested.

This is a wonderfull book for those looking for a different voice in colonial empires. The author manages to find and rescue the voices of female and proposes questions to understand British India in a different way.
