Because of the probability of offsetting genes, females are less likely to be severely affected by these conditions.
^DBL Since the X-linked genes control a pattern of growth, boys are more variable in the age of readiness for the skills required for progress in school. Some are precocious, but many are delayed, and not ready for the three R's at the traditional age of 6. This is the basis for almost all cases of learning disability.^L^L ^DBL Being on the X-chromosome, these genes, favorable or unfavorable, are not passed on from father to son, although they are passed on from father to daughter. This invalidates earlier studies of parent-child transmission of IQ, which have included father-son correlations. In effect, earlier studies have come up with estimates of the heritability of intelligence that are too low.

ROBERT LEHRKE, now retired, worked as a clinical psychologist in Minnesota state institutions and in private practice and has taught at several colleges and universities, including William and Mary. Dr. Lehrke has published extensively in the area of sex-linked intelligence.

Scientifically correct, politically incorrect

Dr. Lehrke's book documents that the IQ of an average woman is one percent higher than a man, for example. Such scientific observations are currently "politically incorrect." Now that the human genome has been documented, it is only a matter of time before it is decoded and detailed mechanisms are understood. In this process of decoding human DNA, the specific differences between the sexes will be documented in even more detail than what Dr. Lehrke has provided in this seminal work.
