Review
"This book is a gem. It condenses the essential elements of arguably the most holistic and no-nonsense evidence-based theory taught in psychology and counseling courses into a primer that offers substantial and practical information.

"In just 105 pages it presents, in easy to read form, superb descriptions of the essence of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT): the foundational and pioneering cognitive approach, particularly as applied to drinkers of alcohol.

"In addition to clear explanations of the REBT theory, it offers informative examples and applications of the classic "ABC" method for changing disturbing emotions and cravings, includes little known facts, consideration of some myths about excessive drinking and drinkers, and encouraging words about what to do if relapse occurs.

"Masterful clinical psychologist Dr. Michael R. Edelstein, and the late writer and REBT tutor Will Ross, have created a primer that can enhance the lives of individuals who want to change their drinking behavior, that can enhance the lives of their family members and friends, can contribute greatly to students of the helping professions, and add beneficial knowledge and tools for therapists and supporters to use in their helping roles.

"Highly recommended! (and I'll healthily drink to that!)" - Dr. Debbie Joffe Ellis, Psychologist, Writer, Presenter, Adjunct Professor of Psychology, Columbia University

"Unlike many authors writing about problematic drinking, Dr. Edelstein does not tell you what to do. He helps you reach your own decisions, by helping you consider what is most important to you. Then, if you decide to cut back or stop, he shows you in detail as powerful a method for changing drinking as we know. If you are ready to change, this method may be all you need." - Tom Horvath, Ph.D., ABPP, President, Practical Recovery

Sound Advice on Managing Alcohol Use as Well as Implementing Abstinence
By Gunars K. Neiders
I found "Rational drinking: How to live with or without alcohol" both inspiring and an easy read. The straight forward explanations and advice in this book are refreshing. The analysis of the problem and the suggested exercises to prevent problems are invaluable. For a motivated person who wants to live life to the fullest while not succumbing to the ravages of alcohol abuse this is a "must read". This book bypasses much of the nonsense as well as jargon and less than useful half-truths about drinking.

There are some caveats, of course. Personally I recommend abstinence for persons whose drinking has gotten them in serious legal problems (such as DUI's or other felonies), severe health problems, and/or chronic job or relationship losses. Should a person with the above history still try to moderate their drinking they can still benefit from this book. However, if possible, I would recommend that they also seek professional guidance with the understanding that what is termed harm reduction (a la Alan Marlatt) has its limits--it does not eliminate harm, only reduces it. Besides that they should put into place some strict guidelines such as never operate a motor vehicle under any circumstances when they have had any alcohol whatsoever and never use alcohol when prohibited as part of probation or parole.

For the sake of full disclosure, I am a licensed psychologist practicing Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and find the philosophy expressed in this book very close to my way of thinking. I first encountered Dr. Edelstein by reading two of his books. I met Mr. Ross by subscribing to an online forum for REBT clients and practitioners. I have personally worked with both drug and alcohol abusers/addicts and have read much of the literature dealing with alcohol abuse and addiction. In my personal library I have over forty books running the gamut of theories from Alcoholics Anonymous to SMART and SMART Recovery, from proponents of Total Abstinence, Moderation (as in Modern Moderation and Moderation Management) to Harm Reduction. I have also read my share of government publications and brochures and books by private for profit programs.

Repetitive
By Melissa Young
Repetitive repetitive repetitive. This book oversimplifies a complex issue with advice that is not inclusive of most situations or of most problem-drinkers desire to get totally wasted. Once a problem-drinker catches a buzz, their inhibitions break down and they will not use the advice in the book. Not useful or pragmatic.

The right approach...for the right person
By Marty Nemko
Some people with an abuse problem are best treated with 12-step programs. This book isn't for them. Others are treated best by childhood-rooted psychotherapy. This book isn't for them. But many people are best treated with cognitive therapy. This book is for them. Excellent, concise, well-written...Oh and a bargain.
